Hi and a Merry Christmas to all.

I was in the garden yesterday getting a few cans out of the shed and i noticed that there seemed to be, what looked like soggy bog roll lying next to and on top of my drain. Its a small waste drain that serves the upstairs toilet and kitchen.

Upon closer inspection i noticed that it was bog roll and the associated 'waste'. In the last few days we have seen the coldest weather yet around here (-10C or below), is it possible that my drains have frozen or is this just a standard blockage that wont go away until i pay someone? We have never had this problem before and the toilet/kitchen use has almost halved as there is only me in the house now.

The water does eventually go down the drain a little but as soon as i pour more down in quickly comes back to ground level and overflows.

Cheers

Nick

Edited to add: Double pissed of 'cos all my drinks in the shed are frozen solid too

Sounds like either a blocked drain or a broken sewage pipe, the former not in your grounds/garden but in any immediate neighbour's garden.

In a similar situation on a rented property, i contacted local Water Authority/Company, who on the telephone were able to help with the run of the sewage/waste pipes.

Doesn't sound good then frown

I only get the water coming backup the drain when using the kitchen and the bog at the back of the house, using the bog and the front of the house doesn't seem to make any difference. I dont know if it has anything to do with it but outside the front of the house in the road, the water in the drain is also frozen.

Its cold around here!

Sounds like there's a blockage somewhere up ahead, there shouldn't be any water hanging around anywhere.
Im guessing the drains are fairly shallow if the standing water is freezing.

One of the drains in my house had frozen a couple of days ago, so it's not impossible.

If you have a dripping tap or steady trickle of water, plus a shallow fall on a shallow pipe then I'd suspect that's what's happened.

Thaw is due on Tues - you'll find out then!

Cant wait..... for the first time in 28 years i haven't enjoyed the snow/winter. The cul-de-sac i live in is like a bloody ice rink, HGV driving is no fun when you have to deliver to pubs down small country roads, its bloody cold and im well and truly fed up! Drains may just be the final straw that 'breaks the camels back'.

Breakdown on its way........
