Chap in the Northeast forum looking for ideas - it this one ok?

Newcastle A69 to Haydon Bridge then A686 to Penrith and on into the Lake District.
A592 to Kirkstone Pass and the minor road right to Ambleside. Follow the A591 to Keswick and the B5289 Honister Pass and on to Cockermouth. Book somewhere to stay and have a visit around the Jennings Brewery
A595 to Carlisle and the M6/M74 to Moffat. A701 northand the B712 to Peebles
B7062 to Traquair right onto B709 (cross the A708 at the Gordon Arms Hotel)and then left tonto the B711 to Hawick.
A6088 through Bonchester Bridge and then right onto the B635 towards Newcastleton but turn left onto the C200 to Kielder then Bellingham and back to Tyneside.

Mostly pretty good.

The A686 from Haydon Bridge up towards Alston is a nice bit of road. You could as an alternative try taking the Military Road accross to Brampton then the A689 up to Alston, both scenic and fast roads.

If just doing the trip for a nice drive I'd suggest using the "general traffic" road alongside the M6/A74(M) as it's a more relaxing drive. Almost all of the roads around Peebles are fantastic but can be a bit on the narrow side.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm I agree I forgot about the Military road (B6318) from Heddon on the Wall - fast with great scenery - especially the Roman Wall
