How to value my dead but modified '5?
Discussion
As an early Christmas pressie, I got news from the MOT centre that my '5 had failed its MoT in quite spectacular style. It needs a new suspension arm, a lot of welding, new rear sill/arch panels and the associated painting and finishing. Total cost is going to be around £1600-1700 which doesn't seem worthwhile on a 16 year old car.
The car is a 1994 1.8iS, so has ABS and lots of goodies like electric windows, electric aerial, electric mirrors, chrome kick plates etc. It also has a JRSC supercharger kit with a PWR intercooler and Bipes ACU, FM suspension kit (AGX adjustable shocks, FM springs and FM top mounts), Longlife stainless steel cat back exhaust, 15" mk2 alloy wheels, mohair hood and a nice Nardi steering wheel. It also has a brand new glass mat battery (literally the only place I've driven since fitting it is to the test centre!) and ARB poly bushes front and back (fitted in 2009).
I've owned the car for just over 10 years, it has approx 96k miles and is MOT'd until 11th January. Apart from the bodywork issues, the car is in great condition and mechanically is very sound. I'm thinking that the best option for me might be to try and sell the car as is, either to someone who can do the welding themselves much more cheaply that I can get a garage to do it for, or for someone to break it. I'm sure the best way of maximising my return would be to break it myself, but I don't have the space, facilities or know-how to do that unfortunately.
So the question is, how much do people think the car is worth in it's current state?

I did put a post similar to this on Nutz, but it looks like the mods have deleted it without telling me why. Not the friendliest welcome to a forum I've ever seen!
But anyway mad4amanda and Batty, YHM!
I don't find Nutz to be a particuarly friendly forum either. I saw your post over there, I think it was taken down as they don't allow "Whats it worth" threads. But anyway mad4amanda and Batty, YHM!
I had an advert taken down because I put £offers becuase I genuinely didn't care how much £££ I got. They took that down too because you have to have a price, so someone missed a bargain.
And don't even get me started on the aerial fiasco!

On topic:- Real shame to break that!

I reckon you could get it sorted for quite alot less than that.. Even if you got the welding done somewhere else and gave it a rattle can paint job just until you could afford to get it blown in properly.
nutz don't allow what's it worth threads as they have been used to get around the selling rules.
however, if you post up with your problems you might find someone that can give you a good deal on the welding and re-spray. shouldn't be that much to fix, i reckon you'll get it completely sorted for under a grand.

To answer the OP’s question, the question you really need to ask is what could it be worth.
A quick trawl on Nutz suggests that in good working order it’s probably worth about £3,300 (although some of the regulars might be able to give you a more accurate valuation).
One person selling their turbo for £3K

One person failing to sell their supercharged car for £3.8K
http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6...
As a breaker, you’ve got some good money parts (again these are only rough valuations, I’m sure guys familiar with the stuff will be able to give you better prices)
- Super charger kit - £1k – (Bit less for a simple one, bit more for a complicated one)
- Alloys - £120
- Suspension, if in good nick - £250
- Battery - £30
- Hood - £100
- If it has the proper limited slip diff - £150
- 1.8 Brake calliper carriers - £30
- Other stuff - £300
Brings you to just short of £2K worth of stuff if you break the car. If your repair valuation is correct, the car is worth about £1,700 before the repair.
Now the tricky question, how much could you actually sell it for as the new owner has to go through the effort of either fixing it or chopping it into bits.
That’s down to each individual personally, I guess the other guys on this forum could tell you that.
If it was me and I didn’t want to invest in fixing it or do any serious breaking, I would get that super charger off the car and sold and flog the rest of the car for a couple of hundred notes on ebay.
As said above, I’m not particularly familiar with all the specifics of the kit fitted to your car so I await the barrage of re-valuations but you get the broad idea.

The main question is - did you want to get out of MX5 ownership, anyway? If not, simplest equation would be - what would it cost to get yourself in the same position as before.
Given the extent of the mods and the fact that you would have had the remedial work done at a garage (which sort of tells me that you're not going to take the car apart for all the nice parts, then do it again on another car) I'd say you'd be better off having the work done than buying another one (which may well fall victim to the same maladies sooner or later) and do it all over again...
