advice needed for the heating system on P38 Range Rover
Discussion
Hi all,
Had my Range Rover for nearly 3 weeks now and enjoying every minute. A good time to buy, just before the worst snowey weather since records began. Had a few teething queries but each sorted easily, including some great help from you guys.
I noticed a new problem today. The automatic temperature control screen started showing a an open book symbol with an exclamation mark by it. The handbook says the computer has detected a fault in the airconditioning system, and to contact dealer for assistance.
Temp seems fine and everything appears to work. Anyone know the kinds of things it may have detected/thinks it's detected? Could it be to do with the outside conditions being so severe? Might it be expensive if I don't rush to a Landrover gargage immeadiately?
Any advice would be gratefully received as I'm used to plain old 40 year old Series 'Rovers and am becoming a bit paranoid by all this vehicle's computerised malarky!
Many thanks in advance

This usually idicates a fault with the blend motors but it can indidcate a fault with almost any component in the HVAC system, most P38's will get this every so often, they control the temperature on each side of the car (one motor per side) and another motor to control the air distribution, check all the directional controls work and check BOTH sides of the car get warm and cool correctly,if the drivers side one is ok and the passnger side one fails you'll probably not notice it from the drivers seat...
There are 3 blend motors and they usually fail due to the pollen filters being neglected and getting clogged up, you're looking at £250 to £350 to buy genuine new blend motors and a day ana half labour to fit them at a dealer, there are various cheats to get them done quiker but most garages wont do these, look on rangeorvers.net under blend motors for a better explanation of the 'cheat' techinques..
Change the pollen filters anyway if you dont have a record of them being done in the last year easy 5 minute job the fileters (2 needed) are available on abay for about £15 the pair..

Thanks for the info, 10mpg.
I'll start by getting some new pollen filters as they don't look too clean. The heating system seems to operate fine, apart from the warning sign on, so I'll just monitor things for now.
For the sake of any future Range Rover novices, I have found loads of info here:

that might help someone with a similar problem searching this thread.
