Hi all

I have a 1987 90 3.5 v8 which looks like it came out of a range rover. I was driving it today to take the dogs for a walk, I parked up and took the dogs for a walk came back and it wouldn't turn over, so had a look and the fan belt is snapped but luckily had a spare! so put that on and still wont turn over, jumped it and still nothing, so checked the coolant and there is none in it!

towed it home in neutral and I will fill it back up with water in the morning and see if it will turn over and look for any leaks.

so whats the likely out come of this?

it was going to the garage anyway for a full service this week but looks like its going in for repairs as well if luck isnt on my side!

bad news would be something has happened to the starter circuit at the same time the fan belt snapped.

bad bad news is the engine has seized due to lack of water as its overheated.

Well it doesnt seem to be seized as I put fresh water in, took a whole watering can to fill it back up so there must be a leak somewhere, garage will sort it when I drop it off anyhow.
Anyway It started and seemed to run alright so not seized! must have been the starter!

Possibly a seized water pump. May have frozen and cracked.

PS ive just been offered a range rover 3.9 v8 auto with an LPG kit, it is rusted as hell mot failure but the engine box and LPG are good!

do i go for it and swap the 3.5 v8 for a 3.9 v8 with LPG

What are the advantages of this? apart from near TDI running costs with LPG!

will the 3.9 bolt straight in?

the rangy has a 4 speed auto which is the same as mine so should fit my box too?

Like all aluminium engines the Rover V8 MUST ONLYbe run with an appropriate coolant; plain water will kill it through corrosion quite quickly.

You might be needing that 3.9...

Check the core plugs..they may have rotted out or been pushed out due to frost.

I would drain the water out that you've put in in case it freezes and does some more damage!!!
