Hi chaps.. hope you all had a lovely christmas and got loads of things you wanted or not as the case may be..Went out in car yesterday and the fuel gauge was showing near empty so went to a petrol station and could just about squeeze a tenner in..Then noticed that it read full then empty and all the gauges were dancing about..rubbed me eyes..nope not me..The volt meter flicks up and down when i indicate..The speedo reads 30 then 40 then 30..I do plan to get someone on it in the new year but are there any main relays or earths that can be checked as i dont have a relay diagram so i dont know whats what..Many thanks..ziga

Yeah, it's quite common. All the instruments share one earth feed which is often the bonnet release cable! Best way to cure it is to identify a wire connected to the case of any of the instruments, verify it also connects to the cases of all the others, then take a wire from there directly to the battery earth terminal (or at the very least, the earth strap to the engine - though even that can exhibit a high resistance and introduce problems of its own).

You'll also find them going up and down when you open a door and the light comes on.

If you run a thick earth strap from where the bonnet release handle is bolted down, to the rear of the engine, where the battery earth strap is bolted on, that should take care of most of the variation.

Either copper braid or cooker cable should do the trick - but with the latter solder it to some metal lugs at each end for a good connection, and leave it a bit slack.
