Did you ever think a government scheme would actually work?

A million UK children 'lack access to computers'.

Ok, did I miss the part where this became a fundamental educational flaw??
The little BiL is 14, has had internet since the day he was born, doesn't know how to type, and all he managed to do so far is set up a facebook account to play games.

Honestly, I think there are bigger problems than children not getting online at home. The can get online everywhere else.

Just wait a couple of years, why would they expect that such a recent tech (<20y) would be available for everybody so fast? And not to say that for most children it doesn't add anything to their education/social life. Next they'll be complaining that 5mil still have to watch tv on a sub- 40" screen.

They say it like its a bad thing. Most the time they spend online will be porn/video games/facebook afterall.

Whenever i go to the local library about 7/10 computers are unoccupied.

They have access via school / libraries, that should be enough.

The reason that the baby chavs aren't doing their home work is not a lack of computers it is because their parents who are probably 12 themselves see no need for education as school is for losers. Why should those bd teacher make little <inset chav name> do homework as they are going to make millions on X-factor or by getting her tits out.

"It also claims those from the poorest families are two-and-a-half-times less likely to have the internet at home than children from the richest homes."

So what they are saying is that rich children also don't have internet access either. And?

Harsh words, but thats pretty much the sum of it.

Even if X-factor fails, once housing benefit, council tax benefit, child benefit and income support or disability are accounted for, anyone who doesnt have friends high up in industry is better off on the dole anyway.

Funny how the older posters on here come across as the most well educated, despite having no internet.
I think the internet is a great research tool, but imagine as a 10 year old with history homework, if you were left unsupervised in a room with a history book and a load of comics?

I find it odd that one government department (CSA) define things like a TV, car, PC etc. as a ‘luxury’, and are not taken into account when assessing payments, but if you are benefits, the government class them almost as a ‘basic human right’

How does that work?

You are not wrong smile

I spent huge amounts of time down the library when I was a Kid!!

Mainly getting Gollanz science fiction books out in fairness smile

Asimov was my hero when I was 11 smile
Ahh, Foundation series
cloud9
Still, bet I learned more from Asimov than kids would from the internet.
I was in a college recently to use their technical printer.
Must have had 60 or so PCs and nearly every one of them had a game on, mainly destroying buildings wit siege engines.
Signs all over the place saying game playing was banned.

Indeed, it's the elephant in the room. Poor kids don't do so well because of a poverty of ambition and no amount of social engineering is going to fix that.

Look at africa, kids walking miles to school and the entire classroom sharing one book.

Throwing money at chavs who don't want to learn will never make them learn.

If you want to improve the standard of education then reduce the leaving age to 14. Then the trash can fk off before the important exams etc turn up.

The trash will never work anyway so why are we attempting to educate them?

If they want to work then let them start learning a trade or join the forces at 14.

I really, really don't understand what the government are trying to achieve here.

It appears that giving away free laptops and internet access is simply going to teach the great unwashed how to cyberbully earlier than they would have done, how to spend all day on facebook, whilst playing games. Internet access costs as little as £6 per month (Talk Talk) and if they can't be bothered to spend the money themselves, fk 'em. i would bet they have a 360, 42" Plasma and all manner of electronic gadgets (and probably a PC already) - if they are given this technology as a freebie, let's have a look at the browser history after month 1 to establish just how much learning they've actually done - not a lot I would think, and if they've so much as had a glimpse of porn or facebook, take it away.

I can't remember when the state last tried to help me. All that happens is I see more of my wages being poured down the toilet with little or no return.

The moment I can leave the UK to spend my life on the beach with an offshore account, so much the better.
