I tried starting my 5 this evening. It has been standing since October. The plan was to tidy it up, tax and then go for a little drive.

Well that plan went right out the window. I de-activated the alarm, the battery to my surprise still held charge. All the lights, electrics worked fine.

That was until i tried starting it. It's turning over but not starting. More like making banging noise. I'm going to attempt it with jump leads tomorrow as it may just be a case where it needs a good dose of jumping to get it started.

Hopefully better luck tomorrow.

Do the lights on the dash fade away when you're cracking it? THat'd generally point to the battery being flat as you suspect. If it's something more terminal I would be cautious about continually cranking it.

Yes and no. The dash lights flicker off but not fade away. I haven't continually cranked it yet just in case the engine is frozen. I flushed the cooling system pre summer and for the life of me can't remember wether i put any coolant / anti freeze in there.

I'll be looking under the bonnet later this afternoon to see if anything is frozen or not. Fingers crossed it's 'only' a dud battery.

Is it actually turning over or just "banging"? If the latter (sort of a machine gun dadadadada sound) then battery, not enough power to turn the starter but the solenoid is engaging/disengaging.

No i never tried as i was called into work. When i got back i discovered that my Legacy was dead too so i have put the battery on charge overnight and i'll attempt the 5 tomorrow.

It is a gun type noise so fingers crossed it needs a little jumo. Then i can clean it out, put some cat litter in there as the interior is condensated pretty bad.

Interesting, does that prevent it from completely steaming up? Mine does the same thing due to the garage being very damp.

Silica gel works a treat, often used to stop stored caravans getting damp.

Same concept as a dehumidifier. I hat some old post and work ties in the boot. They are all soggy now.

Update -

Yesterday was a very productive day. I bought a new battery and 'made' it fit.

Then i cleared out all the junk, took the door cards off, replaced the broken clips, greased the window mechanism, greased all the joint on the hood, took the speedo out, changed the bulbs that were blown (same as sidelight bulb) then i took out the old Kenwood CD player and installed a new Alpine non gaudy unit.

After this i replaced all four tyres, changed the oil and filter, flushed out cooling system, cleaned expansion bottle and washer bottle out, changed spark plugs and gave it a clean.

All that is left is some polish and buy some tax and i'm ready to roll onto a summers worth of top down dossing, lovely evening and night time solo drives and lots of B road bashing.

Tappets are noisy though frown

Always worthwhile with sticky HLAs. Apparently it can be quite good to run on diesel engine oil for a few hundred miles as it has more detergents in than petrol oils, before refilling with the correct grade.

You might try some Wynns hydraulic lifter stuff.

No worries. I think they suffer from periods of non-use and also irregular oil changes.

IMHO - Mobil 1 fully synth 0w40 every 4-5k miles, and a damn good Italian tune up!
