Hi,
I bought GT5 a few days ago, primarily so I can learn a bit about the Nurburgring before I drive it again this summer.
Unfortunately, what I've come to realise is you've got to unlock the track by completing a load of challenges beforehand.
I've managed to get 4th place on the Top Gear VW bus challenge, but this doesn't give me anywhere near enough points to move on to the AMG Challenge - roughly a third of what I need looking at the red bar indicator.
Anyone any ideas on how I can move on!? I can't see me getting any better than 3rd position on the tedious Top Gear Challenge.

To unlock the 'ring you need Bronze in all Beginner and Intermediate AMG special events (which are done on the ring itself).
You don't *need* to do the top gear challenge for this, aside from using it to get the experience points/level needed to unlock the AMG challenges.
As others have suggested; use the license tests or regular A-Spec events to get more experience.
ALSO - and not sure how many realise this; your B-spec level also counts; e.g. if you have B-spec level 14 that unlocks all lvl 14 events even if you don't have A-spec lvl 14.

What's the difference between A and B spec levels? And for that matter, what the hell are they!?
I've never owned a games console before. Not that you can tell.

As a player you have one "A-spec level" and one "B-spec level". You gain A-spec level from driving in any/all events you can find; licenses, special events or the big red a-spec area on the GT Life page. Nothing from Arcade mode (you have to be in GT Life). Once your level is high enough, the AMG event will unlock (you will be notified of this on the GT Life homepage).Oh - it didn't when GT5 first came out, but you should be able to get experience (and therefore level) in multiplayer races now, if that's your bag. The tracks available in multiplayer are the sum of all tracks unlocked to any of the players in the lobby. So if you're lucky you might get in a lobby where people are racing on the 'ring and get to drive there 'early'.

Basically there's a big set of events, starting at Beginner and going up in difficulty to Extreme. This is [almost] identical for A-Spec and B-Spec. A-Spec is when you drive. B-Spec is when an AI driver that you create drives, and you tell them [crudely] what to do. Its a *very* simple driver management game, but can be fun. B-Spec is mostly useful for getting cars; you get cars for every event you win, and money - which is used to buy cars!(all cars and money are shared across A-spec and B-spec).

B Spec is like "Football Manager" but for a racing game. You pick a car and a race and then a virtual driver drives for you. Ghey as fook if you ask me.

I did say that I'd done all the licences to bronze standard.
And pardon me for not being nerdish enough to know how to 'rank up'.
Ok, in really simple terms, go to the 'career mode' home screen and you'll see two ovals at the top of the screen with I think red and blue progress bars and a number overlaid. The red number bar is your A Spec rank.
When you go into special events and pick a category there will be a kind of coloured flag with a number on it, this is the rank you need to get access to that event.
If your current rank is too low then you need to increase it to get access. You can do this using the licenses or A spec races.
For info your driver rank/level is used to determine which cars you can buy and which races and events you can do, as you need a high enough rank to buy the cars or enter the races. Keep an eye on the required rank stated on the car or event and compare that to your current rank displayed at the top of the screen.
I don't have a problem with people asking questions etc, but it's annoying when I'm answering them and getting ignored.

I'm 25, never had a console before and I'm usually fairly mild mannered, but the VW mini bus challenge has very nearly caused me to throw the wireless controller against the wall so many times over the past 3 days. So tedious and infuriating.
Glad I won't have to endure it now.

It's good on forza3, but amazing on GT5. There is a side by side video somewhere online and not only is the actual track spot on (forza is not perfect in alot of places re elevation and camber) but in GT5 they have even gone to the trouble of putting the trees in the right place... Every bleedin one of them.
