Freelander 2 mpg , Auto vs manual

Hello , I`m new to this forum , having just bought a TD4 Auto as a winter runaround and a freelander 2 SE 6 speed manual as a family car .
My father in law has a HSE auto which struggles to better 31mpg on a run , whereas our SE 6 speed manual showed 46 mpg on a steady un up the A1 yesterday and easily averages over 40 . A friend with a 2007 Auto , also confirms that the automatic `box returns significantly reduced economy .Has this been picked up before - I`d be interested to hear reports.
We all suspect that the published figures for miles per gallon are somewhat optimistic, but the fuel efficiency of the auto FL2 seems way out .

My 2010 Auto, averages 32MPG on the trip. Reset it today for a 100mile cruise up M3, trip showed 35MPG. Quite disappointed it's not better as my previous 2.7 D3 & 3.0 RRS averaged the same for a much heavier car with an auto. Guess it looks like a good 10MPG difference between the auto & manual.
I wish I knew how to get anything like 40 mpg from a manual Freelander 2. Over a distance of 5k miles of mixed driving ours gives a consistent 34.9mpg. Driving on the motorway at a constant 60mph gives around 38 mpg; push it to 80mph and consumption becomes 32mpg. Where am I going wrong?

Had my FL2 from new and on 3rd year of ownership at 30k miles. Great car, but my current mpg readout must be the same currently. If I am *very* careful I might see 32/33, but that would mean 50 mph on a lazy carriageway, and not town or motorway driving. It has a reasonable amount of punch in 3rd gear especially, and I know I could drive it much more economically if I wanted to. I guess it doesn't bother me so much as to drive it sedately!Does anybody really buy a Land Rover and expect good fuel consumption ? Its atributes are decent offroad ability !
Owners of V6 petrol Freelanders may have a right to moan about 18 mpg and ability to consume gearboxes but 30 mpg out of any offroad 'brick shaped' 4x4 is acceptable.

When people are being told to expect towards 30 from the new RR TDV8 4.4ltr, 29mpg after 600 miles of relaxed mixed driving from a 2.2 FL2 is not good enough.but 30 mpg out of any offroad 'brick shaped' 4x4 is acceptable.

There`s no secret to it ! keep the tyre pressures right (on good quality rubber) , don`t carry about excess stuff in the car and keep a light right foot . The FL2 will cruise nicely at 70 (aerodynamics kick in over this as far as "efficiency goes") and enjoy the ride .
My FL1 TD4 Auto is returning 30-33 on shorter trips , but has roof rails which cock things up a bit , as well as M and S tyres .
Both are on regular diesel ( £1.37 per litre for excellium diesel near me , so no thanks).
Having said all the above , I`m in rural North Yorkshire , so any form of city work would make 40mpg largely academic .

How are you working it out? Or is that a life time (or a long distance trip not reset) average?Also driving style, weather and road/journey type can vastly affect mpg.

Thanks. Yes it was just regular diesel. Both times we've done the trip it was for a holiday so I was in no rush. But it must be said driving round Normandy doesn't involve many queues and the roads are excellent. I just keep it steady on the motorway, no unnecessary acceleration, anticipate well for overtaking etc and you can easily make a few mpg.
I sound like a grandad!
