Got an e46 M3 with 70k on it, due an engine oil service tomorrow which im doing, whats the intervel for the gearbox and diff as i might do them while im at it, and anyone got the oil spec for box n diff, also the car has had two inspection 2 services during its life, I know with porsche engines once the valves have been run in the clearence is reset and they are good for a long time, anyone have any experience of these engines and the intervel between reseting the valve clearences??

Valve clearances are done every Insp2.

Diff oil is 75W 140 and Gearbox oil is Castrol LT2/3.

Does anyone know how much the valve clearence reduces generally?? In the past I found engines will tighten up quite a bit as the valves bed into the valve seats and after that they dont change much? Is this the case with this engine ??

MY E46 m3 cab has just had an inspection 1 at 71k miles. Seems strange that yours has already had 2 inspection 2 sevices, the second of which must of been around the 60k miles mark??

Anyway as mentioned gearbox and diff oil should've been changed at insp 2 so you shouldnt need to worry about that for a while.

Valve clearences should be checked at each insp 1 and insp 2 service but they will only be adjusted/reset if required as this will require additional work.Checking them is one job, adjusting them is quite another! Mine were fine at this mileage although the car has had a very easy life.

According to the indy i take my car to,the main problem with with the valve clearances is that the valves can actually stretch if the car is subjected to hard use ie.track days therefore making the tollerances tighter rather than slacker as you would expect due to normal engine wear.

If you car was serviced at a main dealer or a reputable indy then the valve clearances should've been checked at the inspection services and should be fine untill the next inspection.
