Driving along the A39 heading towards Bath earlier this afternoon in wife's company Prius. Held up by old duffer in crumbling Rover 45. Short stretch of dual carriageway approaches, hit the power button (summoning all the power of a Moulinex) pull out to overtake and...a very large deer jumps over the hedge on the right and sprints across in front of me. Hit the anchors hard, from 75mph, somehow miss the deer and it explodes on the front wing of the Rover alongside me. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but the damage to the Rover actually quite shocked me. Right hand front corner severely stoved in, suspension damage, engine fluids all over the road. Bambi bought the farm but was able to remove a crappy Rover from the motorised gene pool in the process.

A reminder that the unexpected can always be just around the corner. Thank God I wasn't on a motorcycle.

(Now seriously considering going back with the Land Rover. Mmm, venison...!).

Hit something like that even at a low speed and it will seriously ruin your day and your car, they weigh a fair bit and have a very high centre of gravity, the big ones in particular just about windscreen height...

Very amusing, but in all seriousness, having seen what happened to the Rover, which must have hit the deer at circa 50mph-ish, I really wouldn't have wanted to have been sitting in that bag of crap if we'd hit it at 70-ish.

Oh I'm not suggesting for a minute that you should have been in the car at the time, potentially suffering injuries - on the other hand, you did miss a golden opportunity to get another Prius off the roads.

Love the name BTW, very old school.

Nearly had this chap in beside me in the Spitfire last summer. Passenger in the car behind was poised with a camera already and snatched this shot. Car looks high at the back as the brakes are hard on.

god damn it man. Why didn't you floor it and kill the Prius? It would have been an excuse to get a car that actually has some power and is more efficient. I don't know. A Golf Diesel perhaps?

Could have had a beautiful site like this http://priuschat.com/forums/attachments/gen-ii-pri...

Aha! So all that brake recall shenanigans was just a load of bo11ocks eh? Brakes worked fine in this case!

I would have gone for some venison for sure! You didn't even hit it, so its legal! The rover owner would not be able to take anything by law smile

I almost hit a big deer on a twisty road in the Lake Disctict one night. I was driving a 106 GTI pretty hard, came round a corner to see a bloody big deer stood in middle of the road.
I dont know who was more scared, good job it jumped over a wall as if I had hit it I dont think I would have survived.

Glad you are ok.
You going for the meat?

A huge deer nearly landed on my bonnet a few months ago.

That one cleared a hedge, too...

I hit one last year...Stoopind thing just jumped over the hedge right in front of me..shocked the bejesus out of me, but managed to swerve and luckily hit it on the nearside wing. Cost £100 in bits from a scappy.

Always go back with a mate and collect the corpse though - they're worth £200+ in meat if you take them to a butcher.

imagine hitting a cow at 70 mph, a deer has a similar effect.

You'd be fairly lucky to survive hitting a cow at 70 or even at 40.
