Water pressure issue - new water main

We have relatively good cold water pressure, but naff hot. The house is 20yrs old and has a direct fired water heater. I'm guessing that the hot water is gravity fed.

I want to change the water heater before it goes pop and deposits 380litres of water throughout the house.

My idea is to have a new water main dug and fed into the integral garage, where a boiler and water softener will be installed. Lastly a megaflow type tank in the upstairs cupboard.

Now my potential problem is that, if the pressure is still not sufficient, I'm led to believe that you cannot add a pump to this kind of system.

Lastly, how do I find someone that will dig in the new main - taking a tee from the existing feed into the house?

Any advice/suggestions welcomed.

Before considering an unvented cylinder seriously, or ANY sort of 'direct from mains' system, I would check pressure, but more importantly FLOW. I'd want AT LEAST 2.5Bar and over 25 litres a minute really. You can overcome flow problems (which are FAR more important than pressure problems on unvented systems) with an accumulator, but it's expensive.

Do you know if it is possible to retrofit a pump to an unvented cylinder (just in case)?
