Broken Forza in less than a week :(

Right fellas - bought an xbox 360 for the kids for Chrimbo with a few games to keep 'em amused - obviously got Forza for myself (and my son aged 7)

We appear to have knackered both discs already by stupidly moving the console from on it's end to the horizontal while it was working - awful clattering sound came from inside!!

Now we have big 'score' marks around the discs resulting in the game 'freezing' more often than not whilst loading a race.

Do I act 'dumb' (not hard) and take it back to the nice chaps at GAME and say it won't work and hope they give me a new copy, or do I 'fess up' and just buy a new one?

you could give it a polish with a cutting compound like tcut ect.

i would never have a 360 standing on its end for that very reason.
lie it flat and you wont get a problem.

Borrow a copy off somebody and copy it to your hard drive, then just use your copy to start the game up.

If you have a damaged media you should be able to send off for a new copy of the disk at a small cost. You have a licence to own the game. That's the main cost. A replacement disk from the publisher should be much much less than a new copy.

I recovered a nephews game by doing this. I started using something very aggressive then worked down to AG SRP. Worked OK after!

You might be in with a bit of luck as the was an XBOX disc scratching problem and they did swap discs at almost cost price at one stage.

Some links for replacement disks. I'd check the 2nd one is still valid before sending the form off. But as you can see it is/was £10 a disk. Much cheaper than buying again.

Make sure to copy the game to the hard drive, it will avoid any further problems.

Yep moving the console from horizontal to vertical or vice versa will do that, i know no one bothers with the manuals and user guides but it does tell you in there.

For future reference places like blockbuster and hmv have a buffing machine. I think it's £2 a pop it is worth it if the diy method fails.

Funnily enough I did exactly the same the day I got my Elite/Forza 3.

I couldn't wait so went and got another one!

My cousin did this to mine on Christmas day last year. Had the collectors edition so wasnt too pleased with him His dad was stood there when he did it made an awful noise and he even said that didnt sound too health. Told them what happened the day after and they both denied all knowladge of it

Luckily several friends had it so copied on to the harddrive and been starting it with my disk no problem.

I've done it myself twice in the past by accident

the trick is knowing if it's damaged the internals of the xbox itself when it scratched

I bought a cleaning kit to try and get rid of the plastic dust from the disk
but my xbox since then has had a hard time knowing what game's inside it!
So i think i was unlucky enough to scratch the lens surface

best head off to Game/HMV/Gamestation and get the disk polished up if possible
After that it should be good as new.

Did that with Gears of War when it first came out, the dvd tray really is the worst bit of kit known to man they really must have worked extra hard to make not only the loudest DVD drive on the planet but one that dosnt actually hold disks at all!

Fair point on the noise (HDD install FTW!), but Microsoft do state that you shouldn't move the XBox at all with a disc inside, even if the system is powered off. Any non-laptop drive (where you secure the disc onto the spindle) should be treated the same way too, really.
