F1 suspension design article.
Discussion
Hi,
For all those that like the technical aspects of F1 and high end racing engineering i've written an article prompted by some pictures i found on an old hard drive about some design projects i've worked on. I'll probably do some more articles over time as i find pictures of various old projects.
The current articles are about the Prost AP04 front suspension upright and a special Porsche carbon/titanium suspension system i worked on.

Hope it's of some interest.

I find this stuff really interesting, be great if you do any more!
Nice bits designed/fab'd there! But Carbon 'bones on anything other than an F1 car scare the F outa me! (F1 teams have the budget and testing resources/management to prevent stress and macro impact damage cracking failures, but on a "normal" race car, no thanks!) (although i'd wager that the car just sits in a garage / museum mosty! ;-)
Cheers guys.
I'm going to do an article on carbon wishbones next i think, as there are a couple of interesting transferable technolgies in what F1 cars use.
I understand your concerns with Carbon, you should have seen the drivers faces when we made the first Carbon brake pedal. That's another article to do actually.

Yeah, like to see some more details on the carbon 'bones!
tbh, a carbon brake pedal doesn't worry me, after all, most modern cars have a plastic pedal box (although the brake pedal does tend to have a steel stiffening insert!), but wishbones, that are hanging in the breeze under the car, and can easily get impacted by dirt/stones etc, yikes, you'd want to keep a VERY close eye on those!

Very well written, good to read an accurate, informative article on composite design/manufacturing as used in F1 by someone that has actually been at the coal face than just reported about it.
Some of the design methods and processes are a little out of date but still a really good read.
If you were at Prost then I'm assumming the guy you mention who you worked for was an ex-squaddie, ex-ICI employee and ex-McLaren employee. I too worked for the Doc and with a few other characters I'm sure you must have come across, Mr. Dempster, Mr. Bomphrey and Mr. Sadler.
How did you get to work on the Porsche project, I thought that was done in house by the owner of the car as a showcase for the owners engineering business?

Doc, was an R&D engineer not a designer. I never worked directly with him, but, most of my colleagues had worked with him, at Ferrari and Arrowss.
For me i work for the UK arm, we effectively had the suspension and cockpit layout and some other aspects to look after. Prost in Paris looked after the chassis, engine layout etc. I worked directly with John Barnard and with little input from Paris thankfully. The guys you talk about were Prost Paris employees althought John had been their boss at Arrows and Ferrari so i know of them through him and the little bit of exposure i had when i spent time in Paris.
I don't know what the Porsche owner is saying and what the official line is from his point of view so i best not make any comment on that. Things did change after i left and that project is continuing in some ways even now. It's therefore highly likely to be a very different setup to when i was involved.
