Now here is a group of Politicians who thought that their way of life was a good one and if you didn't cut the mustard in their World then it was pretty much game over. Building apace, no worries about planning permission remember, plenty of land but if you run short there was plenty more to plunder. Lots of plebs to do hard graft and waiter services, poor service, no problem throw him/her to the lions. Debauchery, wine and drugs every day and night. Where Oh where did it all go so badly wrong, look at us now, like mice in a mouse wheel. I reckon that Italian P.M has the right idea.
Now you may ask what is the point of this drivel, I leave that to you. drunk

Not in my time they haven't and its there that we hold the moral high ground, having apologised to half the bloody world, for us enslaving them. soapbox Jeeeez we have it so easy now with only a few trillion pounds debt to pay off, Aids, plundering of ever reducing World resources, Climate warming, and the extreme Rightwing views of a few P.H'ers. What can possibly go wrong hehe

"Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury." - Either the Scotsman Tytler or de Tocqueville. Not sure.

That is probably the closest to an answer.

Others say it because their wine goblets were made from lead.

Slavery existed before the Roman occupation of Britain and after. That same slave trade continued after the Romans arrived, Britains in the majority were not slaves to Rome.

I suppose they could still apologise though, I mean what did the Romans ever do for us?

You think the fact there are only two of you will make any difference? They'll capitulate quicker than you can say 'consegna!'*.

  • Surrender, in Italian. Possibly.

You could make precisely the same point re British involvement in the african slave trade.

His point made it sound like everyone in Britain immediately became slaves under Roman rule, but very few were slaves, those that were already slaves. So they don't need to apologise and neither do we over Africa where slavery still exists. smile

It was the Normans. All peasants were de facto slaves. All hereditary peers should apologise to us.

...drive from London to Holyhead on the A5 trunk road. From the very beginning the road we know today as the A5 was a major thoroughfare: as Watling Street it was the Romans' main road to the northwestern edge of their Empire.
