100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L or 300mm F/4 L

Looking at hiring a lens to take to the mach loop (for those who don't know, its a hill to stand on with planes flying at you, below and level to)

But which one to take?

100-400mm. Zoom range.
300mm. Faster AF and aperture. Or with canon 1.4 extender (420mm f/5.6)

100-400L for sure, its the perfect airshow lens.

And if your shooting props then you dont need fast anyhow unless the light is realy poor.

It's a hell of a hike up the hills to get a good seat though

Tempted my by the 300 f4 with 1.4 extender.

100-400 will likely be as good in IQ terms as the 300+1.4 and faster focusing.


300f4 gives you better is and weathersealig

It was the faster focus I would really want. Last couple of times I have taken my cheapo tamron and my biggest problem was that it struggles to focus.
That extra appature will come in handy aswell.

Weather sealing isn't my biggest worry as the camera isn't sealed.
