Scrapping donor shell
Discussion
I am about to strip a Citroen 2CV which is on SORN to build a Pembleton kit car, using all of the running gear. I understand that in order to register the kit on an age related plate I need to retain the 2CV's V5C, VIN tag, and cut out the VIN number where it is stamped on to the floor. Can I then cut up the old shell/chassis and take it to the local tip, or do I have to dispose of it via an approved breakers yard and get a certificate of destruction? I dont want to end up keeping the 2CV on SORN for ever more after it has ceased to physically exist.
I built a Marlin Sportster using a BMW donor car.
After stripping all the parts I needed, I had the shell removed by the local scrappy but kept the vehicle on SORN, even though in practise the car no longer existed. When it came to registering the Marlin after the SVA pass, I presented the SORN'd donor car's V5 and was given an age related plate. I had kept the VIN plate from the donor, but in practise wasn't asked for it as the V5 seemed sufficient. There was a four year gap between 'scrapping' the donor chassis and registering the Marlin.
At that point, DVLA then officially scrapped the donor. Job done, no issues.
However, it may be worth a chat with your local DVLA office to find out their preferred process.

Agreed you may not be asked for them but I would definetly reccomend keeping the plate and the cut out stamped VIN. Also retain it on SORN and make sure they process the SORN to declare it as scrapped. My local office failed to do this and I got a SORN renewal a few months later. It meant another visit to the office and after a few minutes check they agreed it was their fault and cleared it.
The last one I did went to the local tip, in bits, in my trailer. All I did was take photos on my phone of the bits on the drive, in the trailer then in the skip. However the price of steel could net you some beer tokens if you either take the scrap to a metal merchant or they may come and take it away.

Definitely keep the original logbook - not just a copy. I kept a copy & scrapped the shell, sent original V5 to DVLA saying scrapped. When I came to register they insisted that I fill in a V62 logbook application form (lucky I kept a second copy or wouldn't have had the necessary details) for a vehicle that no longer existed so that they could create a logbook which they could then mark as being scrapped & parts used for donor - utterly pointless & time wasting operation, but they insisted this was the only way I could have an age related reg!!!
I've never been asked for chassis plates from original, but I've always kept them - I would be wary about cutting out chassis no.'s that are part of the shell as this creates suspicion the shell is stolen.
