Bit a problem

Last month my lodger (foreign) informed me they have something in their room. They moved the chest of drawers only to find mould working its way up the corner of the room approx 2ft from ground to the top of it. Now we've cleaned it with various products and got rid of most what what is visible.

What would have caused it, never had a problem before but they decided to get a couple of large plants a couple of months ago which were both sat on the floor near to that corner, i'm guessing they probably spilt water and that combined with the fact they rarely open the windows nor the curtains and the radiator is close by caused the mould. Is this a likely possibility? One of the plants has mould all over the soil and they went and put it back in that corner rolleyes

Anyway what would be the best course of action? Its the perfect opportunity to get rid of them as they're doing my nut and have broken pretty much every rule i gave them but i want to keep it amicable so was thinking of saying it needs replastering etc.

Having the radiator close by would actually help, assuming that actually use it?

Just sounds like a bit of surface condensation. Loads of info on Google about it.

Need to get some ventilation in there, and get them to use the radiator if they aren't already doing so.

Could try putting a dehumidifier in there aswell.

Yep, mould = cold + trapped moisture + lack of sunlight. There may have been other signs of moisture i.e. condensation on the windows which your tenant has ignored. So other than stopping your tenant from breathing (oops bad joke there) i would suggest he/she airs the room and wipes down the windows when they are damp.

Yup i had noticed the condensation on the windows recently but thought nothing of it, they took the curtains down to wash them and havent put them back up yet so just using a blackout blind. The corner is where 2 external walls meet so more chance of condensation i guess, all other walls are internal.

Ta for the info

Both warm air against cold surface/wall and lack of ventilation, don't put furniture tight up against the wall.

Ventilation is the key.
