I have a 1994 toyota celica st202 imported about 10 years ago.It has done 125,000miles,has a k&n filter and toyota racing development exhaust and a new cat last year i'm assured.
It has just failed it's mot on emissions...which are really quite high.
Two garages have tried to sort out the problem but unfortunately have failed.
Apart from the emissions the car is absolutely sound but now the tax has also run out.
Anyone out there had a similar problem or any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.
By the way my mechanical knowledge is rather limited.
PS.I am in Cumbria.

O2 sensor is first thing to look at, second for me would be AICV. This is exactly what happened to mine.

Although saying that, these cars really need to be thrashed for a little while before taking them in for an MOT as the CAT needs to be properly warm to function its best (IIRC).

There is always some additive you can put in the tank too to temporarily fix this issue.

Its the same engine as my now dead avensis. I spent money on sencers and a new cat. If it plums oil smoke if you keep it at a constant 2000 rpm then the piston rings have gone or the bores scored, sorry. My avensis was on 127,000 and like new, still on original clutch.

Post up a pic of the emissions print out please

What base car test were they using for the emissions test as imports are not so straight forward at MOT time. You can either do the standard test or one where they pick the engine from a list & compare it to that.

Ok back to basics.

What items under the bonnet affect idle fuelling?

Air temp sensor
water temp sensor
O2 Sensor
Health of ignition components
MAP Sensor
MAF Sensor

Engine fully warmed up?
Cat fully warmed up?

Possible though unlikely that the cambelt may have skipped a tooth.

It's an import. Toyota wont touch it, despite it being pretty much exactly the same car.

This was the case for me at my Toyota dealer, anyway...
