I'm planning a trip to Sarlat and looking for a place to stop over for a few days on the way down, 3-4 hours from Calais, maybe the Champagne region. Any suggestions welcome Chateaux Hotels, city hotels, good restaurants things to do etc.

Stayed in Troyes at this hotel in 2008. Quite nice for one night, and Troyes is a pleasant town.

I stayed at the same hotel for 4 days in 2005 - great place to stay, with free easy parking right outside.

Thanks guys

Seems like a good base for 2 or 3 nights, but some mixed reviews on trip advisor. Breakfast looks expensive, any local coffee and croissant places close at hand? (although I try not to be a cheap-skate 100E for the both of us for breakfast over 3 nights could be better spent)

The centre of town is not too far to walk, and there are plenty of places for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Here's one for you. Just off the motorway, about an hourish from Calais.
Stayed here several times after catching an afternoon crossing from Dover - very handy and nice. A choice of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets as well.
Unfortunately their new website doesn't appear to have an english translation yet!

Looks v pleasant I will keep this one in mind. On this trip I was thinking more of a couple of nights in city/town not too far from the tunnel so I can take an early crossing.

Alternatively, buy this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/French-Breakfast-Special-A... - and see what France really has to offer.

Over the years we've stayed in a 12C moated castle, something that looked like a gingerbread house hehe old farmhouses, various Chateux (Inc one that produces 80,000 bottles of wine a year) and for 70-120 Euros a night.

I have French relations in Troyes and have been visiting there all my life. Its a lovely town and is the historic capital of the Champagne region. Theres a nice restaurant that I go to in the main square but I dont know what its called I could find out for you.

Troyes food market is just brilliant and far nicer than any food market you get over here. Also go to the sublime chocolate shop called Palais Du Chocolat at 2 Rue De La Monnaie http://www.pascal-caffet.com/

When eating out in Troyes avoid the Troye sausages, unless you enjoy tripe.

Top one is northern France, about an hour from Calais. I'll ask the miss us for the details.

Second one is Spain (sorry!), Rioja region.

Third is Chateaux Carboneau, near Bordeaux

Fourth... Not sure. Was central France, but again, I could probably work it out. That one even had period style furniture!
