I was discussing this earlier today* and got nowhere, but pistonheads is the most intelligent UK forum I am on, who will know this, I thought, so here we are...

So: what happened to cress?

Ten or fifteen years ago, you would get it with salad all the time. You could even buy it to grow in your kitchen, iirc... heck even it could be the hair of potato men like figures. But I don't recall seeing it for fooking ages**. Why's that then?

*Admittedly, it was with my parents and brother, but then I am stuck in the sticks atm, with internet that can't even handle youtube....

**At least in a restaurant. For all I know it's all over the shelves of supermarkets... would never purposefully buy it, although I may now just for old times' sake, or something...

Bizarrely there was cress in my mashed potato at the works Christmas Dinner.

I remember eating it straight out of the soil when walking around the supermarket doing the rest of the shopping with my mum.

I can't ever remember buying myself though......

Why don't we get any other vegetables that are still growing in the supermarket!?!?

I just sent this email out to a relatively sizable section of my address book:

me said:
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

You have been contacted because either I thought it was a good idea to send you this email - or I thought it was a terrible idea, and I wanted to see what would happen if I did something stupid, having not done anything particularly stupid since last Wednesday*. In a couple of cases (and you'll know who you are BECAUSE you don't know who I am) I'm not even certain who you are. But you're in my address book for some reason, right?**

Anyhow, for the last decade or so there has been an alarming reduction in the amount of watercress served in salad. I am fairly certain a decade or so ago, it was all over the blooming place. This thought came to me earlier today, and so I resolved to do some research. Half hearted, this research was, and eventually I found this website:

Oh, you were expecting a link?

Do the research yourself, if you care about watercress. Apart from the random names on this, and the crap like pokerstars support and microsoft support and adobe support and frankly a cavalcade of support that got on through lazy clicking... you know where to look (googl* [it's a vowel])

Gosh, a pathetic sentence cum paragraph that gets nowhere. But suffice to say, there is an eating contest. In which the competitor eats watercrest. And the world record is useless. The winner has eaten 160g of watercress in "49.69 seconds". That's useless. An earthworm could do better, and they st out both ends (I think).

So... to the point. Well that's the point. Let's not just break this record, let's smash it. As a team. A massive one. All of whom can eat watercress. Please do get in touch soon so I can get a team together and teach this salad muncher how to much salad.

And there we go. Somehow I feel that I should end this with more than a perfunctory valediction, yet it would be arrogant of me in the extreme to nominate any theme or any thing or any one to be in your thoughts, words or deeds. So please just think. As you do all ready, no doubt ***

And for goodness' sake don't donate to Wikipedia.

Kindest Regards, and Happy New Year

Dave

*Gosh, I looked things up and, and to clarify, I mean the 22nd. Didn't do anything terribly stupid on the 29th at all... well that proves my point - stupidity is even more urgent!

**For your privacy, I've hidden everyone's address. I'm such a nice chap.

***Apart from some of these random emails. No clue who you are
I'm in trouble tomorrow I think but tonight I DON'T CARE!!!!!!! biggrin

I remember a bit on a telly programme about cress(or possibly watercress) being a superfood with antioxidants and stuff and it being dead easy to cultivate, so clearly we should be eating more, and if the world ends/gets flooded like the watermelons keep telling us we may not get any choice(probably). This may be nonsense as it's quite late/early.

As WTD posted there is a difference between (Mustard?) Cress & watercress, they have different uses.
Both are still avaliable at Sainsbury's *
Cress 29p a Punnet, watercress £1 a bag.
* Other shops sell stuff

Yep, watercress is imo becoming more popular therefore I suspect you are actually alluding to mustard cress.

If I need to buy a sarnie for lunch, I'm actually quite partial to an egg and cress one. M&S are a little posh and use watercress in their version, though this is quite nice too!

One of the earliest and easiest things children can grow is 'mustard & cress' - sprinkle the seeds onto damp tissue and wait.

It is also a jolly wheeze for students. Just before you leave your accommodation, soak the carpet in water and sprinkle cress seeds liberally. The new occupants will have a lovely crop to welcome them for the start of term...
