Laser/Radar detecor

Not strictly SatNav but a similar in-car gadget I hope someone will be able to help me with.

I was looking at purchasing a Snooper S5-R radar and laser detecor.

The problem I have is this unit mounts on the windscreen. This means I either need to leave it there on display all the time or I need to continually remove the unit when im not driving.

I dont live in the best of areas so I really dont want to leave it mounted all of the time.

My question is are there any laser/radar detectors are have remote censors that I can install on my windscreen whilst keeping the unit itself out of view?

I've done some searches but cant find anything that has remote censors

imo the detectors aren't that great. Reason is that normally if you can detect the signal then it has already hit your car which means that most of the time it will have given a reading back to the gun by the time you can react so it will be too late.

Not sure if the technology has changed much since the old snooper type ones, only technological advance I'm aware of is the jammers garage door openers.

I have a Pogo Alert and there is a new model out that is smaller. Mine sits in the r/h corner and isn't very noticeable.
Mine gives off an alert when you enter an area known to be used by lasers and scamera vans as well as cashcows and it tells you the speed limit.
It will pay for itself if you avoid a 3pt £60 fine because you will get an insurance hike as well. for several years.

I don't know as I have never had a Tom Tom. Pogo Alert will detect a radar and laser gun as well as working out your average speed in scamera areas.

IME having 3 points as does Mrs Dods there has been no increase in insurance. In fact she picked hers up 6 months ago and my insurance this year has gone down £150 :-)

I think these devices have had their day. I use the pocketgps camera database with my tomtom. It has every fixed camera in the land regardless of type, including the SPECS in roadworks. It also knows about all the red light cameras. It also has verified hotspots for scam vans. Warns well in advance and reminds you verbally of the speed limit.

As has already been said by the time your laser detector pings you've already been done. And plenty of cameras like SPECS and TRUVELO dont use laser or radar. As the only devices that use radar now are the old gatsos which are all in fixed locations the tomtom is probably more useful,

Well I received 3pts/£60 fine for doing 40 in a 30 and my insurance went up £200.

Well insurance has generally gone up for everyone this year regardless. But a few phone calls can reap rewards. In my case I went with Aviva , told them I have 3 points and their response 'doesnt everyone sir ? - that wont affect the premium'

I am sure some insurance companies do load premiums for having 3 points , just have to avoid them.

I was under the impression that detectors were now illegal to use and only gps detectors/databases were ok????

In answer to the OPs question the snooper 3zero is supplied with a dashtop mount and is very easy to quickly remove and hide when parked.

I use the PocketGPS database on my Tom Tom and the 3zero, I accept the usual arguments that if the laser alarm goes off its too late but I still wouldn't do a trip without both operating.

No, the idea was mooted but it never got off the ground in parliament.

I found it made me complacent and lazy in my forward observation so I went back to the Mk1 eyeball detection device.

As far as I'm aware they are, basically what can happen is if you forget to turn it off when you've left your house, they constantly send out a signal which unfortunately can interfere with the laser guns and throw up an error.

Yep I have a 3zero in the Mustang - worth every penny IMHO.

Not sure if they sell in the Uk but I just got an Escort 9500ix for the Camaro. It was $500 but seems to work well. Will pick up everything the US plod use (although if it picks up laser you're probably already pinged, fortunately most of the guns used are radar). It also comes loaded with a gps database of all fixed cameras and can be updated weekly. Although fixed cameras are not as prevalent here as in Blighty they are growing in use.
