I understand that the early 1.6 cars weighed 940kg, apparently this increased to upon the introduction of the 1.8 motor?

I'm interested to learn what accounted for this extra weight, was it the engine itself ... anyone?

Engine, then upgraded bits like chassis bracing and brakes iirc.

Some of the earliest, most basic spec cars might be that light but once you add power steering, air con, electric windows & mirrors, leather seats, 15" wheels etc. it'll be closer to 1000Kg.
The later Mk1s have a stiffer chassis as well as extra chassis braces and also more safety equipment such as door bars and some had a drivers air-bag. I don't think there is much difference in the weights of the 1.6 & 1.8 engines.
Most enthusiasts add extra bracing to their Mk1 anyway so I don't think the weight difference is really that great anyway.

Interesting, does your car have air con (I'm assuming it does have ABS and PAS)?
