E46 M3 Check Engine Light

This light has recently appeared on my dashboard. What is the most likely cause? The car is slightly misfiring in mid range acceleration. The fault codes when read by a BMW computer is talking about a vanos issue. Car is 2003 with only 55k on clock.
Any advice/help appreciated.

Could be a lot of things.

Milage is irrelvant.

Could be a coil pack, cam sensor, Vanos solenoid.

Were the codes read when u pulled straight into the garage?

One issue can have several knock on codes that register.

Best thing is to read the codes, note them down, reset it and see what comes straight back.

Could be O2 sensors as well.

what colour is the light? yellow or red?

I had a problem with an air flow meter that came up with spurious codes that never lead to the cause!! BMW accused me of running out of fuel!! My car was throwing up the engine light and going into limp home mode, and I'm sure was coming up with "lean, bank 2"??? (Was a few years ago!!) Never really related to anything. Even BMW couldn't tell me!!

The colour of the light is yellow. Initially, the car was misfiring slightly and down on power,
but is now OK. However, the light is still on. This problem appears to be intermittent.
The car was low on fuel the day before all this happened, wondering if there is a link?
