As you're all aware, I'm looking to change my Vette a little.

The new wheels arrived today (that was FAST from California!!), and I put this baby on at the weekend.

I'd been looking for a C5R type spoiler for a good while, but was unhappy about the prospect of paying $1400 + shipping and taxes for the real deal.

I found this in a car tuning shop in Middlesbrough. It's the perfect size for the C5, and I can already feel a difference in handling, as it sits just short of level with the roof.

Cost me a grand total of £180

I gather most of you won't like it, but it just looks nothing short of awesome on the car. I'll post some more pix soon when I put the new wheels on.

Also - on this photo you can see my silencer free custom made 3" exhausts. You can probably imagine what they sound like...

Once the front bumper has been built, I have a few other minor body changes to do, then I'll be getting the whole car resprayed. The colour is a secret at this point, but it's very very cool!

As long as you like it, that's fine. Personally, I don't like those wings on any car. A bit too fast'n'furious for my liking.

You should be aware that there was a time and there still may be a time when they'll prosecute such appendages as that wing edge looks as effective as any knife it it hits someone. S.100 of the RV (Construction & Use) Regs states that "all...parts and accessories shall at all times be in such condition...that no danger is caused or is likely to be caused to any person...on a road".

MOT testers can be fussy about such things and may insist they are removed.

Don't forget to declare these mods to your insurers otherwise they won't be paying out in the event of a claim.

If the pics don't decieve you have at least a 45 degree attack angle on the wing, I'm not supprised you feel a difference, most race cars only run a few degrees of wing! With that kind of angle you will have probably taken off 50 mph off the top speed, if it stays on long enough to get there.

Not being pissy Col but adjust it to around 2 degrees nose down before you loose it!

It's not 45 degrees - it's about 20, I think. I hadn't really given it much thought, to be honest. I hate to say it, but the wing was primarily for vanity reasons!

The camera is kinda a fish-eye lense, so it distorts everything. I will level it out a bit - it is adjustable.

Gawd, I feel like I've been told off at school - personally gunned down by Geoff Jeal!

Not at all, don't want to see you break your nice car! At 100 mph the "average" single element wing can produce around 1300lbs of downforce, as a test grab hold of your wing and see how much it flexes when you try and pull it off, then imagine what 1300lbs is doing to it!!!

Yeah, I know. Only messin' with you.

Based on your recommendation, I will adjust it - yours is the only opinion I truely respect on Vettes in the UK!

If you are interested go to www.mulsannescorner.com, at the bottom of the page there is an artical on aerodynamics which compares road and race car aero packages. If anyone is fitting a wing it makes interesting reading.

You've left a comma in Geoff!

www.mulsannescorner.com/

Actually I have been wondering what effect spoilers have on top speed as mirrors and even a radio aerial can cause drag.

There used to be a lot of debate about the effect the optional wing had on the Lamborghini Countach. One magazine swore they couldn't get the old Lambo to exceed 155mph with the wing. Mind you they could only get 170 out of it without the wing which shows you how lame they were. Probably as good at driving as Cl*rkson. Did anyone see him corner his SL55 on a track? Anyone could have done better with a '59 caddy!

I just HAD to change my Euro mirrors before Germany.

I can't be the only person in the world who wants to mod up his vette a bit without it having to have a reason? 'Course it'd be nice to think that it helped along the way (which is why I'll pay attention to Geoff's recommendations), but I wanna change things a bit!

As for the "Rice" comment - that is kinda a "yesterday" thing - aesthetic car modifiers aren't people who just buy a nova and bolt on big wheels and tint their windows with bin bags - we spend a lot of cash on making our cars look how we want them. Some people like 'em, some don't. It's all personal taste.

You are quite right, not liking big spoilers and using "ricer" phrases is a personal thing, when you get to my age a lot of things are 'yesterday', however in racing circles there is quite a thing still current about 'racers v ricers' and that is very much today!
This is not directed against anyone who wants to modify their car just a personal opinion, perhaps I'll just consider myself told off!

Point being that if you know how to drive properly, you can't be anything but a racer in a car that does 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds!

I will be spending a lot of cash with Mr. Jeal in the not too distant future to make this car even quicker, but due to a number of unfortunate incidents (my boss damaging 2 of my wheels, and me catching the nose cone of the car on the garage wall), I figured I'd go ahead and "rice it up a bit"

Only 4.5 seconds! The pace cars a little qicker than that now, and as for the Camaro, with Procharger, which Geoff did a lot of work on, thats even quicker. The point being that we are all a little different with what we want from our cars, have different ways of achieving it, but in the end are part of the vette 'family', good luck with futute mods.
