The cider in my local pub is flat and lifeless.

It is the brand that you see everywhere, the ad has arrows shooting into the bar.

I don't drink the stuff, but it has stopped a couple of friendsdrinking in there which is a shame.

The landlord says there's nothing he can do. Otherwise he keeps an excellent pint.

Isn't cider supposed to be flat and lifeless? You know, from a few hundred years back when they started making it without compressed air?

It might be the glasses. Try having it in one of the lager glasses with the etching on the bottom that releases the bubbles from the drink.

That's been tried, it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.

Is the gas put in on its way to the tap or is it fizzy in the barrel?

The barrel comes with fizzy cider in it then gas is used to maintain pressure in the barrel to force the drink to the pump and keep the remainder fizzy. It may need more pressure.

His cellar service should be able to advise him on the right gas to use - there are many different Nitrogen / CO2 blends.

Why not just enjoy it as nature intended, ie without the bubbles? That might expose the brand as being a bit lacking in actual flavour, but that could be a blessing in disguise if it gets you onto real cider.

Personally the fizz is a critical part of the cider experience!

Trouble with that is he's talking about Wrongbow and there is nothing about that 'that nature intended'.

That Magners stuff is minging too. Especially when the ice that is apparently an essential part of its composition confused has melted.

The ice is just a marketing gimmick.

It does seem even more horrid when it's not cold though.

Wasn't ice in Cider a sixties thing?

Not to my recollection. Mind you, I've forgotten a lot of Sixties stuff.

Check cellar temperature - could be too high, it should be around 52-55 degrees F
Check the python re-circ unit is working properly, there is an inspection hole in the top ensure there is an ice bank and not tepid water.
Check correct CO2/nitrogen mixture is full and working correctly
Make sure Keg connector is working properly and is not damaged.
Make sure glasses are clean

After that call in Cellar services.

I'm reminded of that James May/Oz Clarke episode where they went to a cider micro-place.

Apples go in the top, cider comes out the bottom. Two kinds, Sleeping Cider and Fighting Cider hehe

Makes any marketing-led ABC1 segmented fizzy pap look a bit silly really.

I've been putting a little ice in bland cider for decades and now some adman decides it's 'in' so I look like a nonce

Wouldn't dream of putting it in anything decent or my homebrew though. As for 'fizz', now that is for nonces hehe

That's exactly what I wanted, thanks very much.
