This is getting silly. Twice this week i have fancied going for a spin into the hills near me and have thought 'nah it will cost too much' and have had to satisfy myself with having more fun on the necessary journeys/
I don't drive anything approaching fast or exotic and am on an average wage but i am seriously considering getting something which runs on veg oil or finding out where i can get red diesel (illegal i know). Seriously peeved off.

And yes i am a tightwad but seriously its getting past the point of belief now and i am wondering how the cost of fuel is encroaching on others enjoyment of cars/vehicles etc.

About 12 months ago! Driving here is becoming ferociously expensive. One thing I won't miss when I leave the UK later this year is the cost of filling up.

Hmm, im already at the point where i very rarely go out for a drive "just for the fun of it" on my own anymore. I still regualarly enjoy a spirited drive at every oppurtunity when i'm already in the car though.

I think if petrol got over the £1.65 (i.e costing me £100 a tank for a 60l tank) i would have to seriously start looking at how often/fast/far i would drive.

Unfortunatly i feel its probably not too far off frown

I don't think you are being a tightwad. There are some some fantasic roads right next to my village, i have often gone for a blast on my way home from work or just for the hell of it. But these days i do it less and less. I mean, a quick 25 minute hoon and thats £10 up in smoke which is a lot to me.

I deliberately ringfence my sunday hoons though, if i stop doing those because of the price of petrol then they have won..

I went for a 90 mile drive on some fantastic roads earlier, £20 was probably worth it just to get out and have some fun, the cinema costs approx £15 when you've included getting there + drinks and sweets. I'd say anything over £1.70 a litre and it'll be me finished having random drives out frown

To be fair i've been thinking the same. I filled my Pug diesel to the brim yesterday and it cost me just over £90. Friends are not coming to car meets simply because of the cost of fuel getting there and back.

The only way past it is by cutting down on costs elsewhere. I'm going to stop smoking (then start again when i go on holiday).

It is crap though, when a tank of fuel can be upto a tenth of some peoples wages.

8 quid a litre will get me concerned. We're probably not going to get anywhere near that in the next decade, so I'm not bothered.

i just can't fathom how people are putting up with this. i just tanked my car up at £1.24 and to be honest i don't really pay much notice to the pence per litre bit but i do pay notice when it costs me £92 to fill up my family car and 10 ltr jerry can (just in case).

i don't even commute into work as its that close. this must be killing people who have long commutes or partners who live quite a distance away. i actually had to turn some work down today as it was so far away that once i had paid for fuel to get there and back i would be left with buttons.

and on top of that i heard on the radio that tax goes up to 20% tonight which urged me to fill up today.

Seriously thinking of making road trips every other year rather than yearly, even abroad fuel prices have soared, especially with the crap pound. 3000 mile+ a week at high 20's mpg equates to an expensive holiday frown

I've had some thirsty cars in the past . The current Legacy isn't exactly frugal. For the first time ever I'm thinking of getting a small diesel estate in band C , £30 Tax and should be 55+ mpg. It'll do 90% of the Family motoring needs.

It won't be fun , as a motorist it's the first time I've ever felt persecuted so much that I'm willing to give in . A sad time. I could just about afford to run something far less efficient and much more fun , but congestion and speed cameras make it far more difficult to really enjoy such a car, hence my change of heart

On the plus side I still have a Motorcycle for the odd blast to clear the cobwebs away

It would be interesting to dig up the previous thread with the exact same question, and see how things have changed.

You'd probably find that there will be those that said they would draw the line at £1.20 per litre.........and then don't/didn't.

I think prices will continue to rise and the UK motorist will just keep taking it.

In a year or two, we'll probably look back at £1.25/l and think how good we had it.

The bit I find most annoying about high petrol prices is that you can't just help someone out for instance. In the past, someone wants to borrow my van and I wouldn't have a problem with it. If they used quarter of the tank, it was no big deal, happy to help.

But now (and for the last 12 months), if you want me to help move a house or pick something up 100 miles away or borrow the can for a day, then I need a bit of cash for the fuel and non of my friends have a problem with that as they know it's costing an arm and leg to run a vehicle these days.

It's already enough that I take the motorbike to Newcastle instead of the car as a matter of preference now. I manage, at best, 25mpg, and at a 600 mile round trip, that's 24 gallons, or about £130 now.

Which, I suppose, means that the government are achieving their aim of keeping us just quietly sitting in one place, and not complaining too loudly about it.

Definitely. Remember the public outcry when petrol hit the pound barrier. We'd kill for that price now.

Bearing in mind I'm planning to get the Mustang back on the road this spring, I'm cutting down on commuting fuel use instead hehe Human-powered commuting mostly for me.

i have my bike licence and am seriously considering returning to having a bike as a main form of transport. something like a bandit 600 would fit the bill perfectly and still be quite fun.
harrowing thought to think that only a few months ago i was trying to convince myself i would be ok with running an impreza turbo on the grounds that i don't commute. for the people who took the plunge i applaud you but i just couldn't stamp on the loud pedal without thinking about the consequences. small minded i know and not in the PH philosophy of things but the mortgage has been a great leveler in my case and put alot of my 'boozy nights' into perspective too.
come to think of it women, booze and petrol were probably my greatest outgoings before the mortgage and in exactly that order. guess george best was right after all.
