s type wont start
Discussion
hi folks first time on forum so apologise it i get anything wrong.girlfriend has 2002 s type sport.she was giving me a lift lastnight when i suggested giving the car a quick blast as has been idle for couple of days due to bad weather.on putting her foot down the engine gave up the ghost and we had to tow car home any attempt to start the car just results in a clicking noise as if the starter has packed up.any advice would be grateful thanks.
battery terminals seem fine and i also checked oil.fine also.never had anything like this happen before in a car.not even showing any fault lights on dash.someone mentioned car flooding itself but as for the car not turning over he was stumped hadnt heard of it before.thanks for reply.
thanks for reply but still cant get over it dying as we were driving.had friend out and tried jump start but no joy he tested battery with multimeter and was ok but when trying to turn the engine over it was just clicking.he suggested starter motor possibly stuck so will take it out tomorrow.when turning engine over voltage on battery droppped to 6volts.still not sure if this would make car stop when driving though.

Thats not enough volts, should drop 2 or 3 volts when crancking, say from 13 to 10.Its a bit strange it ran and then cut out, but arparts from that sounds like a battery fault to me.
When you tried to jump start it, was it connected propperly with the jumping cars engine running and revs raised to say 2000rpm. If not try that again, connect them up, let the jumping car idle connected with yours for a few mins, then hold the revs up a touch on the jumping car (maximum alternator output) an then try to crank the s type.
thanks for replys.when trying to jump start i didnt leave cables on for any length of time.only as long as with any other car i have had to jumpstart.main difference with the jag is that i connected the negative lead to the t bar holding ths spare in place as this is what the manual insisted be done.could that have an effect on the power going to the battery in the jag.thanks again for replys.
They recomment attaching the earth to the boot stricker or the T bar as a safety precaution to reduce chances off spiking a module. If there is paint or corrosion on these items it can limit the flow of current and make the jump not work.
In my experience its ok to jump as i described straight onto the battery terminals.

well folks i think i can rule out battery.tried to jump it placing both leads on both terminals.nothing just clicks.then tried my battery out of my skoda.same thing.would normally loook at starter because of clicking noise but still cant fathom out why it would bring car to a halt.will keep you informed if i have any luck.ps thanks for all the replys.
Earth fault somewhere? Poor contact allowing enough current to pass to light dash and energise starter solonoid but breaking down and not letting enough through to actually turn engine over maybe.
What happens if you connect a booster battery and try to crank with the headlights on? Unless they are intended to extinguish when cranking if they go very dim or out when you try then you've got a massive voltage drop somewhere.

not good news folks had aa out lastnight done usual checks everything seemed fine apart from the fact that the engine wont crank.suspect engine siezed.i tried to turn crankshaft with socket this morning no joy.spoken to a few people they suspect possible oil pump failure.a bit annoyed that the car can give warning lights to a variety of things but not something that can totally destroy your engine.
thats the most annoying thing the car was going fine until i told my girlfriend to give it a bit of juice.when she put her foot down(trust me she doesnt normally do this as she prefers to cruise everywhere)the engine just died(she did say that at the moment the car died the oil light came on but we are talking about a mili second)it hadnt been on previous and the car had been driven for about twenty minutes going fine.
