A 10-point plan to "restore confidence in speed limits" has been announced by the Conservatives.

The plan included an independent audit of the estimated 6,000 speed cameras in Britain to ensure they were positioned in "genuine accident black spots".

The Tory plans also envisaged a change in the penalty points drivers incur for motoring offences.

Shadow transport secretary Theresa May said: "The public have lost faith in the way speed limits are being enforced on our roads. People believe that there is a war on the motorist, and that speed cameras are being used to raise money, not as safety measures.

"We want to restore people's confidence in speed limits and how they are policed. This means intelligent policing, honest information about speed cameras, and an emphasis on safe driving, not income generation."

The Tory plans include:

The safety criteria for siting each speed camera should be published on a website, along with the revenue (or the number of fines imposed) generated from that camera each year;

Speed limits outside schools should be variable and be accompanied by flashing lights. Penalty points for motoring offences should be variable and range from one to six points. Standard fines should remain, as would bans for excessive speeds;

Revenue generated from cameras should be spent on road safety and the present camera partnership schemes be abolished, leaving the police responsible for enforcement;

Every speed camera should have the speed limit sign clearly displayed on the camera, as well as on each speed camera warning sign.

A well thought out and welcome move. Bravo.

Now the last thing to do is replace Howard with Boris and the transition is complete.

I cannot wait for the day that Blair becomes unseated and that smug self satisfied wanky grin is wiped off his hideous face once and for all.

Good and bad news (for me), as I am one of the 1000's of civil servants who might be out of a job to balance the Tories' rather optimistic budgets.

But lets all make it an election issue - Tony Blair is certainly on the defensive now, and there are enough motorists out there to swing a general election result - might even get some concessions out of the current mob??

....and you honestly trust the pledge of a politician then? Come on, when they realise how much money is made out of them, do you honestly think that they will do anything about changing the current system.....

What they havent said is anything like the following (from what I have read anyway):

1) Partnerships to remain - un-accountable self-appointed
2) No changes to the guidelines to location - remember 15% can now be positioned away from accident blackspots
3) No mention of mobile talivans
4) No mention of driver education schemes
5) I could go on but cant be arsed....

You get my point though - doesnt go far enough and commits to very little - sorry....

dont forget that it was the Conservatives who were in power in 1896 when the first speeding ticket was handed out - and that was for 6mph over the limit

The partnerships would go, according to this:

Of course, I will hang on to see if they actually do it once they're in. Mind you, with Labour's recent performances, they might just announce this in a new initiative in a couple of weeks to make it their idea.
