If you want to spend a bit more, get better zoom and more fucntions go for a TZ7/8/10
Cant really go wrong with a panasonic compact IMO. To be honest if she will just be using it for snappy anything from canon/panasonic/nikon/fuji/olympus/pentax should so the job.

Oh, a bit more info. Our current compact is a 9.1 mega pixel Casio and the images on the whole are poor. Very poor if the flash is needed. So we are looking for something somewhat better than this..

If you'e lookin at spending that sort of cash, i'd go for the panasonic TZ10, great compact which has one lots of awards and been very well reviewed.

The above review includes the Panasonics mentioned (albeit with US model number) plus 11 others.
I haven't read it all the way through but have opened and compared most of the example photos side by side and read most of the relevant info.
From the results I would be seriously looking at the Casio FH100 over the Panasonics, the example Casio wide angle real world, low light (high ISO) and flash photos certainly look better than the rest of the competition. At the long zoom end there is not much difference, the Panasonics do give a bit more detail than most others but there's not much in it.
Obviously quality of the photos is not the be all and end all of what makes a good camera but the Casio scores highly for other aspects. There are plenty of other reviews singing its praises too, Google is your friend.
Even better news is the Casio is currently available for £200 from Best Buy.
I'm totally unbiased by the way, I was just doing research a few months back for a compact for myself to compliment my DSLR.
