Coolant Levels
Discussion
Hello peoples,
My OH has a 54' plate Mini Cooper and I'd appreciate some advice. It has the auto/flappy paddle gearbox, A/C rather than Climate Control.
I've done a forum search but can't find any relevant posts so sorry if this is a 'common problem'. The coolant level in the expansion tank is way beloow the min level. In fact there's no coolant visible in the tank. However, after running for a bit the tank is full - almost up to the top. Before this there is a loud gurguling noise of flowing water.
Common sense says to me it's an air lock in the heating system but the temp guage doesn't move from the mid point - I would expect it to go up and down and then overheat.
The car isn't used much so it's standing for long periods.
Before I go to the dealer - there are a few other warranty issues that need to addressed under the extended warranty - does anyone have any clues what the coolant problem might be?

Nothing common, they can have an airlock quite easy if not filled correctly also the water can leak into the oil through the oil cooler if its broken and in some cases the water expansion bottle can split, thats all really.
Cooper water does drop, not sure where it goes but they all use water, a lot loose water through the bottom of the rad as they do fail quite soon, about 3 years in the bottom of the rad will corrode and some leak there.
The temperature gauge is only a calculate visual and is not in anyway the temperature of the engine, it does go up as it warms but it reaches half way a while before the engine gets to the working temperature also you really have to be over heating before the gauge goes up and generally they just go straight to the top almost immediately.
Get the coolant topped up and keep and eye on it, I would say you do have an air lock somewhere
