Guys, sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm sure you can help.

How do you get insurance on an Ultima?....everyone I've spoken to isn't interested unless it's a replica kit.....original designs are just not acceptable for some strange reason.

I know the Ultima has styling cues from other cars, as do most cars, but I always thought it was a unique shape rather than a replica per se.

Any clues or help?

Cheers, Alan.

Try Hagerty's, they will insure just about anything, even during the build (unless your'e a complete nutbar) , then all bets are off.

Best of luck

Call Ella at American National Insurance Company(ANPAC) in their CHROME division. 800 333 2863 The currently insure my Ultima and my Camaro. The cost of insurance on my Ultima during the build is only $77 every six months. I tried to get Haggerty to insure during the build but they would only insure after the build was complete.

Thanks guys,

I tried Hegartys and they didn't seem interested...
The car I'm building is a prototype for a future kit, do you think it's best just to say it IS the kit, with me being the first customer?

I'll also give those other guys a try, thanks.

What's the red 2-seat roadster being shown as an icon in your posts?

I'm with Hagerty and have been for years. Unlike some companies, there was no pressure to move my normal cars or homeowners coverage to them. The replica thing came up but after a call up the ladder, I was able to get it done. The car is insured for the build and after its finished and an appraisal, for the road as well. Good luck.

Spent some time on the phone with both Hagerty and ANPAC last week. Seems AMPAC won't "bother" to insure just the Ultima without having my other cars or home insurance with them as well.

Hagerty did not have the same hang-up, but seemed a bit pricy. My driving record is good, and I am 35, so no issue there. They have a 3,500 mile per year limit as well. I am trying to figure out in my mind exactly how much to insure for. I could either insure the car for exactly what I have in it, OR I could insure it so that I could purchase a roller from the factory and add engine/gearbox in the event of a total...

Anyway, with guesstimated numbers, a declared value of $100,000 US is about $2,000 a year with a $500 deductable. Kind of expensive, given the 3,500 miles/year limit. So, still searching. I will let you guys know if I find anything better...

Exercise caution when buying insurance, Stated value means you are stating the value and you will have to prove that value to the insurance company in the case of a loss for them to pay. Agreed value means they agree up front what the value is and will pay that in the event of a loss. This usually requires an appraisal of the car prior to them writing the policy.

Typically a traditional car insurance company will write stated value policies and specialty/collector car insurance companies will write agreed value policies.

I experienced a loss with a stated value policy and it took many months, hours on the phone, several meetings, 5 letters and an immense amount of very frustrating effort and even the threat to sue them, to get them to understand the value of the car and pay.

This experience really opened my eyes on the issue of insurance. They are quick to take your money, but will use every avenue open to them to not pay, make sure you do you homework prior to an accident and actually take the time to sit down and read the policy with the view you just had an accident, it is a lot less work then having to do your homework to prove the value after the event! Trust me, I know!

PS, if you want to insure with a traditional insurance company go with Allstate, they are already educated on the value of an Ultima. I educated them!

I live in NJ and had my car titled using the Special Titles section of the DMV in NJ. Basically it is a reconstructed vehicle. The DMV comes and looks at the car to make sure it is safe and then approves titling.

I just called them and got virtually the same quote. Same limits for $1458. Probably the area I live in saved me $50.
