My new front discs arrived today for the E61. I saw the courier arrive on the shop camera and he looked to be struggling with a box of some sort. He waddled over to the door and i let him in. A quick glance at the box and i knew what had arrived. Like a kid at xmas I was a happy man (dunno why buying these things makes us so happy). I then took the box off the courier and was instantly overwhelmed as to how heavy these things are, it was one of those moments where you think you are in control and bang its slipping from your grasp. Im no squirt either so its not like im lacking the arm for it. In the past ive just had the parts sent to the dealer and they have fitted them for me not knowing what the part actually felt like. Puzzled, i wondered if maybe i'd been sent an extra rotor by accident so i quickly unwrapped the packaging. To my amazment there were only the two discs as per my order. Now, ive had sports discs on lots of car and i sure as hell dont remember them being as heavy as these bad boys. Yes they are big (flippin huge actually), but they feel like lead.

How on earth did brake discs come to weigh so much? Surely these lumps of metal hanging from the hubs must have some detrimental affect on performance. Why didnt BMW make them from a different metal or strong alloy?

No wonder mechanics are usually big blokes. Who needs a gym?

Just saw your car was an E61 M5, well it's not exactly light at 1 3/4 tonnes and you do need to have a lot of power to stop 500+ bhp!

Be grateful you don't have the 380mm eight pot upgrade!

These would be even heavier.

The standard units are 376mm so are not much smaller and from what I've read that upgrade kit is actually considerably lighter than standard.

yes

One of the major benefits of floating disks on alloy bells is the reduction in unsprung weight.
