Okay - so now I've sorted out the speaker situation, and fixed the large percussion drum that was the fuel tank venting problem, I am ready to replace the ancient Sony in the Chim.

I need a single disc CD Head Unit (better quality than changer), and much as I would like separate amps etc. I don't really have the time to plumb them all in, so want the convenience of an amplified head unit - although in the future I may strap my aged Rockford Fosgate series 1 to the 6x9's.

I'd like it to be dog simple - (I really don't need dolphins swimming on the display!) but I do want exceptional sound quality.

Those in the know will recognise these requirements pointing squarely to Nakamichi, but they have pulled out the UK and cannot be found. This leaves me with the £350 Alpine, or possibly the Blaupunkt San Francisco, both of which are fine stereos, but uneccesarily complex - meaning I spend money for features I would never use. Unless anyone knows where I can find a Becker for under £400?

Not a big Kenwood / Pioneer fan - all boom and fizz.

As you are all TVR people and know the sound dynamics of the car - I thought I'd canvass you for advice!

There's always some fab 2nd hand stereos for sale in www.loot.com lots of which are still boxed and un-used. I would recommend getting a CD head unit with MP3 ability. I have x3 CD's in the car allowing me 36 hours of music.

beljames,

Have you had a look at the Clarion range. Much simpler than the complex cheapies... Also great quality! I used a Clarion in a Cobra I had many years ago with Kef splits in the front (never sit with your back to the stage )

I used the 4-channels (front and rear) to drive the splits through a passive crossover. Sounded great!

New to Chimaera ownership, so cant really comment on audio dynamics yet, but similar to Cobra I suppose...

www.caraudiodirect.com is a great place to look.

I am very into car audio, and have just fitted a Pioneer DEH945 (£750) into my Chimaeara - It is totally excessive (full 3 way active crossover, time alignment and 13 band EQ) but it was a largely cosmetic decision as it is silver and looks the biz in the dash - JVC SH77 is another unit which look great in TVR dash's and the sound quality is very good too - I have a heard a griff 500 with a very good Genesis system in (guy owns the company) and even that didn't sound great, so I wouldn't worry too much about sound quality as they will never sound that good in such a compromised situation.

Just spotted that you have a 93 chim so unless you have changed all the bits to ally, ignore my recommendations!

The Nakamichi CD45z or CD 35z (the 45 has a changer control and 4v preout) as they are VERY simple to use, look great and have wicked sound quality and can still be sound at some shops. www.cel-direct.com/rad-cd.asp?s_manuf=Nakamichi

there is a used one here

Hughjayteens,

You are a good man. CEL-Direct have just sold one Nakamichi. Must be the last one in the country! Let's hope it doesn't go wrong...

Will be collecting tomorrow and scraping my knuckles in the afternoon! I owe you a beer.

No - I don't have the ally bits yet (but may do soon). If you'd seen the rest of the car you would realise that I don't care too much about aesthetics....

Are you interested in playing MP3's straight off a CDR (130 songs on one CDR) and DAB in a single DIN unit....

How about if I told you it is under £400?

Blaupunkt Woodstock DA52..

I fitted a Clarion DXZ718 unit mainly because it had an aluminium face which matched the dash in my Chimaera. I must admit that it did look the DBs. I have since then upgraded it to the MP3 unit DXZ818RMP - also aluminium. The sound quality from both units is great (and so is the MP3 at 128kbit/s) although the one disapointment I have is that it is only the single CD player in the head unit which is MP3 compatible. The disc changer in the boot can only play audio CDs.

I also fitted a DAB unit although I must confess to not really using it that much and when I have the reception isnt that great 'cos the antenna is fitted internally.
