Hi guys, just went to start the car up tonight, going to work and it didn't sound good. The noise got worse as I turned the steering wheel. I hadn't moved the car at all. There wasn't any real lead up to this. Hadn't really come across power steering problems on the forums before. I've just had all the belts, tensioner, water pump thing done about 5 weeks ago. It's a 156 V6. Unfortunately, I had to get a taxi to work so I haven't had a chance to explore it further. Any ideas? Would you think I could drive it to a local garage?

I have a 156 V6 (1998). My Power steering has groaned twice over the past 12 months, seems to be cured by a ever-so-slight top up of fluid. My Alfa mechanic thought it odd but thinks he has traced an ever so small leak. It only really seems to get bad after a very long twisty blast.

Hi guys, thanks for commenting on my post. I was kinda in panic mode at the time and never checked back. It turned out to be a leaking pipe and is now fixed. Thanks

I also had a leak (why I asked about the level), mine was on the nearside, where the aluminium pipe had rubbed on the inner wing.

Hi wrinx, my mechanic didnt go into details but he said they just "cobbled something together" for me as ALFA replacement pipes are a bit on the expensive side. That's why I've been going to the same guy for nearly 20 years! Save you A fortune.

Fair enough smile I was able to use one of those aluminium welding kits to fill the hole in again...worked a treat smile

Wrinx, what aluminium welding kit are you talking about as i need to fix mine soon? getting fed up of topping it up! It's leaking from the aluminium hose that loops around the off side of the engine bay (might be a different place on the jtd)
