When I browse PH classifieds almost all Gallardo's are in dealer stock, only a couple of private ones available.

Am I mad trying to sell mine privately? Does everyone with this sort of car just trade them in, not dealing with the hassle of a private sale?

I have always sold privately and not accepted dealers offers (due to them being traditionally lower than you can get privately) but also have never tried to sell a car of this value before..

My car's currently on with a dealer on SOR but obviously being marketted far higher than I want for the car (so they have a nice margin) but I feel it might sell quicker and easier advertised at the right private price? Or does nobody really buy these privately?.... Am I missing something?

Cheers

I don't think you are mad to have a go at selling privately. The reality probably is that most owners of cars of this cost don't have the time, and are less concerned about the dealer buy/spread than others.

If I was looking to buy a Gallardo I would certainly look privately, but would probably want an independent inspection.

I think that it is very difficult to sell Ferrari, Lambo and all privately. I also think the dealers usually give you a hard time on part exchange value.

When I am ready to change cars I browse all the specialist dealers that sell similar, note their phone numbers down and telephone them to see if they want to buy outright. If they do I e-mail them a spec and photos and get a purchase price from them. It usually takes twenty phone calls, a dozen e-mails and a lot of insulting offers. Eventually I find some one that will give me a sensible offer and proceed from there.

It takes a thick skin to do this as it is amazing how low some of the offers will be, but you will get there. Out of this you will achieve a price somewhere between a part ex value and an elusive private sale price. I have found in the past that if I work hard at it I can sell a car within 2 to 3 weeks, cash in the bank ready to go again.

The worst was six years ago I wanted to sell my low mileage 550 marenello the best offer from a main Ferrari dealer was 40k I eventually got 54 1/2k from a specialist and they sold the car on for 61k.

If you do this you must be realistic as the dealer needs a profit margin plus money for a warranty and some hassle factor. I have sold my last 7 cars this way.

I previously bought a G from a main dealer and sold it privately to a fellow PHer.

I've always sold my cars privately and would never entertain the derisory figures offered by dealers.

I'm happy to take the phone calls and text messages you get such as "ow much u wont 4 ur lambo m8?" etc, rather feel like I'm giving my car away.

One thing to consider is that anyone looking to use finance may not be able to purchase via private sales...some finance companies allow it, others don't.

I bought mine privately, the seller was on here. I could tell by reading the sellers past posts that the car was well looked after. I wouldn't want to buy from a dealer. I don't feel you gain much for the premium you pay.

I bought mine privately, and will sell it the same way.

Good dealers make enough money on service and parts without trying to rip their customers off when it comes to selling a car. Do they think you would come back again when you have another car or want to sell again?

They are probably on Sale Or Return.

Sweeping assumption = the type of person who owns a Ferrari/Lambo etc. is unlikely to want to waste time off work dealing with potential buyers.

I tried it and I will never ever bother again.

SOR return or sell to a dealer for me!!

Remember its your money here! People who say they cant be bothered are T**ts in my opinion or as the saying goes have more money than sense! If you can get a better price sell privately. But do bear in mind that as a private seller you cant offer finance, which with such a high value car may not play in your favour. However advertise on ebay and autotrader and the phone will ring. Do your home work and qualify callers to ensure no time wasters or test pilots. Good luck with the sale and let us know how it goes.

Had you not considered that some car owners time might be a little more valuable elsewhere. Init.

I've sold all of my cars privately with relatively little hassle; actually my 360 was the easiest/fastest sale I have ever dealt with.

I think if you price it right to get enough interest you won't have a problem selling it privately and in a short time-scale, not everyone wants to deal with dealers, a lot of people would like to get to know the previous owner.

thumbup Likewise, I did the same to buy mine and would do so again and sell the same way.

I think your best bet is to sell on somewhere like PH. Not a great time of year to sell a Lambo though, never mind a convertible. Would suggest you wait till April to sell as more buyers around then and prices tend to be seasonal.

i bought my 360 privately and sold it the same way.....but it can be a struggle...

personally i cannot understand how some people will not just give it a go and sell privately....why take a shocking trade offer.....but i suspect half the time its the sellers fault in wanting soooo much money and being unrealistic to start with.

There's also a saying 'time is money'.

Some people's time is better invested elsewhere than trying to sell cars to people that can't actually afford them. Especially the sort of person who could afford an Italian supercar in the first place.

Another vote for selling privately. I've used PH twice in the last year, and in each case I just followed sensible guidance - give a good, descriptive ad, be honest, price realistically and post some good photos. In each case, I got a sensible amount of interest, and the last car I sold (the Gallardo) went to Peter101, who made the whole deal very easy.

True, I did get some phone calls from people who sounded more like tyre kickers, but if you have a good car, sensibly priced and you apply some common sense to who you invite to see the car, it should be fine.

Cheers

I bought my 575 privately and was able to secure a very good deal as not only was I not paying dealer mark up which in this sector can be a lot ( not disputing its value though) but I bought at a price which enabled me to rectify one or two things myself and still have a good car. I then sold it 18 months later ( to the trade) wothout making a loss except fot the running costs ( which unfortunately included a new clutch) still though, it was relatively cheap ferrari ownership.

If its priced right it will sell privately, but you have the hassle of test drives and tyre kickers. Also many people may need to arrnage finance. If this is the case, try to get to know someone in the trade who will put it through their books for you for a nominal amount to enable the finance co to get an invoice from a dealer to release the funding. I've done this in the past. Bought private, then given a dealer frind of mine a couple of hundred to do the paperwork and effectively buy and sell it for me.

I still maintain that it is best to sell on SOR.

The dealer will take about £3k which isn't a lot in the scheme of things given the value of the cars we are talking about here.

You then have no need to take any time off or waste weekends and the buyer has access to finance/12 months warranties etc. It is also likely the car will go for more thus eroding the £3k lost.

I agree thats a great solution, the only caveat being make sure yuore dealign with someone with ash in the bank. Theres been a fair amount of stories over the years ( and recently) about dealrs going belly up having sold the car and then not paying the vendor.
