307 HDI 90, I've one as the daily hack, does near on 60mpg all day long, doesn't look too old with fairly comfy seats, air con etc, brought it at 100k I've put 60k on since, still running strong, they can be found on ebay for your budget

I could be wrong.

But i'm reasonably sure there's no such thing.

306 came with a 1.9d NA and the 1.9d turbo.
There is not

There was a 2.0HDI and I believe a 1.6HDI, though I think that came too late for the hatchback

i genuenly like our v40 1.9d sport lux, its a 53 plate so prob a bit over your budget but there are plenty post facelift (2001) SE cars than can be had for that money.

I bought it expecting to hate it, and i really don't. i'm currently seeing what mgp it will do, and 200 miles in its on 58.7mpg.

Ford, Focus or Mondeo (if you can get the 2001 on mk2)

cheaper, cheaper to run, more reliable, better drive than all of the others

Anecdote: Did a 220 mile round trip last week in a 2005 2.0TDCI Mondeo LX. Brimmed the tank before leaving, brimmed it when I returned. Worked out 51.9mpg. That was motorway and A-road trip, sticking to all speed limits, and a few overtakes.

My 1.8 LX, exact same age, does 36mpg on the same journey.

Indeed. I have a 1999 V70R, and it's clearly not as good as the BMWs of its day, but I do love it.

Horrid on fuel though and too expensive to run as a drive once a month workhorse though, so I too will be looking for a cheap diesel estate soon too. Actually, a 2002 Mondeo TDCI Ghia at 1500 looked pretty nice recently. Anonymous, loaded with toys and cheap to run.
