Audi A4 aircon ECU dead?

A garage has recently told me that the aircon ecu for my 1.8t 2001 A4 is dead and needs replacing. I have no heaters/demisters which is beginning to grate a bit as its cold and i cant see as the glass keeps misting.

All that was happening was the fault code 10 (something to do with a flap position) kept showing up on the climate control display.

Is it really as serious as this or would i have been better keeping my Nissan Pulsar which actually worked!!
