Saxo 1.6 VTR RPM Circuit Sensor problem

Just wondering if anyone has a diagram of what the RPM circuit actually is. The chap at the garage said it would probably cost more than the car is worth to find the problem let alone fix it.

Any help/ideas with the problem would be most appreciated.

It will all be on Autodata which most mechanics should have. I can't see how a simple wiring problem will cost more than the car to fix! Sounds like he doesn't want to fix it to me.
