More V8 bargains on the way?
Discussion
With fuel going the way it is how long until residuals on larger engine cars take a bigger hit?
From memory they took a massive tumble in early 2009 wondering if we can expect to see something similar this year.
Planning on scratching my 8 cylinder itch in 2011 (big saloon or SUV) and hoping to pick up a real steal!
Cheers

I think engines that big have always been viewed as beyond the means of most people to run; that's one of the reasons that large engined barges collapse in price so quickly. It's getting to the point now where even two litre four cylinder petrol engines are considered too expensive to fuel by a lot of people, especially in family type cars. Just compare the cost of a 2.0 Focus petrol to a 2.0 diesel.

Agreed
Average Joe Bloggs won't have bought one last year, so i'm not sure much will change in the future.

I think lots of people assume that somehow a smaller engine will cost much less to run than a larger one, and that any diesel means they are automatically saving a fortune. I am not denying that some 1.0 lumps give 50+ mpg or that some diesels can give 60-70 or more but something like a 2.0 diesel focus manages around 40mpg if you don't drive like a nun, where a 2.0 petrol (ok I know they aren't that much fun) 318i will return very similar figures unless you spend all your life in a city. I also suggested to a friend that he should look at the 4.6 & 4.8 BMW X5 Instead of the 3.0 Diesel, in the end he went for a super high spec 4.8 cheaper than a similarly specced diesel, the money saved was put towards the fuel & insurance. He recons all factors included they cost about the same.

Unless he tries to sell it, in which case the gap will probably still be similar but he will have spent more on fuel and insurance. I have been patiently sitting at my desk for the last few years, drumming my fingers waiting for bargain AMG's/Monaro's and S4's to appear, if i wait much longer i will have grown enough hair to plat some nice pigtails or threaten the admin girls with my ming the merciless style fingernails/claws.
Unfortunatley there seems to be too many people like us who are holding up the prices of these desirable ballistic barges.

Tell me about it, get 20 mph in town in my Volvo S80, pat_y said:

The problem is that one drops to a suitable price.... and Garlick buys it Unfortunatley there seems to be too many people like us who are holding up the prices of these desirable ballistic barges.

I see what you mean. I bought my Monaro when it was nine months old and it was £12000 cheaper than new. In the following four years since purchase it has <only> lost around another £4.5 - 5K. Pretty irrelevant really as its now only used at weekends and I plan to keep it a long time.Unfortunatley there seems to be too many people like us who are holding up the prices of these desirable ballistic barges.

Think it is a similar story with V8 Range Rovers. I put it down to less new registrations, admittedly I use no science in that assumption.
That's a good point. With no fact at all to back up the assumption, I would guess that there are less V8s bought brand new now, and as such less on the second hand markets. With a core of people (like us
So it's a catch22 and of course only the market can decide, but it will be interesting.
Really quite tempted by an MG ZT260, particularly if the prices come down further.
The financial reality of running something with a big thirsty V8 is pretty scary though. These days you can get plenty of fun and relatively frugal cars for daily transport so the biggest drinkers start to become difficult to justify even as a petrolhead.
Maybe LPG starts to make sense again now petrol has gone up markedly?
