I got back from work today to a tearful message from my mother.

My 39 year-old elder brother, 2 years into a 10 year ban for drink driving (his 3rd DD ban) has just been caught driving by the police. Why did they catch him? Because he had an accident. Why did he have an accident? because he was drunk - not over the limit but actually barely-able-to-stand-up p*ssed.

I'm currently in Dubai - It is now 2:20 in the morning and I have spent over an hour explaining to my mother that it is not her fault (Oh, the other gem is that he did it in the area where my mother is a JP, so he will be up before the bench on which she normally sits)and I am probably the most angry person in the world. My mother says that she is glad that he wasn't hurt in the accident but if I was around I'd damned well hurt him!

Is it the unkindest thing in the world to say that I actually hope that he goes to prison? (Even knowing how horrible that would be for his children)

And a surefire method of getting him of the booze for a while, presumably an alcohol problem is at the root of this? Harsh, but probably the only truly fair course of judicial action now.....

Sent down from Oxford because he was always pissed

2 divorces because he was always pissed

Countless jobs lost because he was always pissed

Frankly, I hope they throw the key away....

It sound like he needs some professional help.
Something like those implants which make you vomit if you have alcohol. =

At least if he is inside he can't drive.... Sounds harsh, but it's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.

So Mr Brunstrom, how do cameras help here? Lets have some plod back on the road because I don't want to share them with your brother if he can't get the help he needs. Sorry.

Its a sad fact of life that some people have a self destructive tendency.
If its any consolation mate, my bro WAS very similar.
After a period of denial of liberty he eventually woke up to the fact that he was off track and pulled it all together.
Hopefully a similar experience will have the same effect on yours.
Reassure your mom that theres really nothing she can/could ever do to make him alter his behaviour, and its in no way her or your dads fault.

Basically some people only learn the hard way.

All the best to you and yours.
