Hi guy I am looking at getting a seventh gen celica 1.8 vvti (unfortunately not a T sport or anything). Just wondering are there very many issues I should look out for, or any pointers for buying one.
The seventh gen celica doesn't appear to get much mention on here biggrin

Thanks for you help

Hey, i have had a T sport for nearly 2 years. Get yourself over to celica club UK for all the help you need. In summary, they are fairly bulletproof, except the prefacelift 140bhp versions can suffer with excessive oil consumption.

Are you looking at the 140bhp version or the, in my opinion much better, 190bhp version with lift? If you are looking for the 190bhp, the pre facelift (2002 and earlier) versions can also suffer from broken lift bolts but it is simple and very cheap to install the updated tapered bolts. Thats about it, apart from those, they are a fantastic under-rated car, the 190bhp engine gives as much fun as driving a VTEC as it revs up to 9000rpm.

Hi Wilbo thanks for your help appreciated.
I will have to look at the insurance/buying costs of getting the T sport as I would love to have one. Being only 21 I imagine I'm going to get a little bit humped on it :P.
Will definitely have to take a look on the celica forums.

If you join ccuk, you can get discounts with sky insurance and adrian flux, but my preferred insurer is greenlight, for me they are miles cheaper than others with all modifications declared and covered like for like

I had a 2001 model with 92000 miles on, drove fantastic but used lots of oil. about 1 litre every 700 miles. It wasnt visable in smoke but check the colour of soot on the exhaust. if its black its not right (mine was). Cars should have a light grey colour.
It was a common fault as mentioned above and was rectified from 2002.

I used a Forte addative which helped massivly, dropped it to about 1000-1100 miles a litre.

Steering is light and precise but dont expect performance, they are not a fast car at all.

Mine is a 2002 model and hardly uses any oil, i regularly keep an eye on it.

Think its unfair to say they are not a fast car at all, the VVTLi version produces 190bhp which is never going to keep up with M3's or evo's but still provides a lot of fun if you drive it hard, and with the suspension sorted with a set of TTE or eibach springs, it is great fun through the twisties. (However I am now looking to move to a subaru, so i guess it depends how you define 'fast')

Sorry I mean the 140 is not that quick, and I dont mean compared to an Evo I mean compared to a fiesta 1.4, and most diesels will pull away unless your thrashing the nuts of it. Never driven a 190 though should be better. The 2002 car was changed anyway so you shouldnt have the oil consumption worries.
