woohoo

...after nearly two months down at X-Works, I'm finally going to pick up the Cerb again.

Wasn't expecting it to be away anything like this long - went in mid-November for a body-off chassis refurb and a few other jobs (new coolant pipes, clutch slave etc), but the temp sensor capiliary had to be cut in removing the body, and getting it refurbed at Speedycables took time. Then there's the fact that I took it down to Blackpool on tyres that could be described as marginal at best, and so I wasn't too keen to collect and drive home with the recent weather - 400bhp, ice, snow and bald tyres do not make happy bedfellows in my experience.

So, home tonight, new front discs and pads tomorrow morning, full set of R1Rs on in the afternoon. All set for a proper run out on Sunday...can't wait!

biggrin You dont realise how much you miss them until theyre not there. An old cliche but so true, especially in cerb terms.

Not too bad - we just found the first pin-prick hole in the top of one of the outriggers, and I decided that it's better to bite the bullet now than stick my head in the sand and hope it magically goes away. Once the body came off, the guys and X-works found a couple of other rusty bits in the usual places - chassis tubes near the manifolds and gearbox mounts.

Now it's been stripped, new metal let in anywhere there was even a hint of corrosion, a couple of reinforcing gussets welded in around the rear ARB mounting points, cold-galvanised in a couple of places (top front corners of the outriggers and around the g/b mounts), and epoxy-mastic'd all over. Should be good for the foreseeable future.

Great - must be a good feeling to not have to worry about the chassis. Got any pics of it?

Hopefully pick some up when I get the car (Paul promised he'd take a few as the body went on and off).

Will post when I get them (makes mental note to take USB key).

This is a thought that I am sure is on the minds of many of us. I am sure many of us would also be interested in costs? PM offline if you prefer...

I would also be very interested to know roughly how much that costs?

I guess Paul and Heath are better mechanics than they are photographers! Not much in the way of horror "before" photos to show, but here are the repairs to the corners of the outriggers:

Main chassis not in *that* bad a state:

Here's the body all bare:

And Here's the chassis all epoxy-mastic'd with the suspension etc back on:

Oh, and in terms of costs, it's a bit hard to say exactly, as there were a bunch of jobs all lumped in, and I guess it depends how much time they have to spend welding in new metal, but I think its about £2.25k (+VAT) for the basic body removal and refit, outrigger repairs and painting, and about £750 (+VAT) extra for the full dip and strip.

As I say, I had a new clutch slave, new heater pipes, gearbox mounts, new heat shielding etc etc, so my bill came in at £4.5k.

Considering the amount of labour in getting the body off and back on again, that doesn't sound toooo unreasonable.

Makes absolute sense to replace anything else that needed replacing at the same time - makes for an initially larger bill, but much more cost effective than putting it off and doing them as separate jobs!

Hopefully you will now have your Cerb in tip-top condition for many years of happy motoring! driving

Post up some "after" pics once you've got her back on the road!
