5 day road trip through Europe - recommendations?
Discussion
Hi
I'm planning a road trip for my brother's stag at the end of April. We're thinking of something round 5 days, taking in some hopefully great roads. The car is a TVR Tuscan S, but there'll be a few others joining too.
What I was hoping is that if anyone here had done a similar trip and could provide some recommendations for roads or areas? Here's the kind of things we're looking for in rough priority order:
1. Good roads. Smooth surfaces (i.e. nothing too bumpy or poorly maintained like you find in Belgium!), with plenty of curves and dips/climbs and ideally as little traffic and speed cameras as possible!
2. Scenery. Lakes and mountains would be great but pretty much anything scenic would be good.
3. For the stops, good food would high on the list. It would be great to take in a city around halfway through the trip, ideally something with good restaurants and bars.
So far one idea we had was taking the ferry to Bilbao then travelling up through the Pyrenees, Cote d'Azur and then Massif central. This would give us an option of a stop off in somewhere nice on the south coast of france, like Nice or Monaco. But the ferry to Bilbao was pretty costly when I last checked.
The last trip I did was Calais-Reims=Cochem(Germany)-Nurburgring-Antwerp-Calais. The most enjoyable part of the driving there was Germany by far, so I'm hoping we can match that and hopefully have some more exciting scenery.
Any tips you could give would be greatly appreciated! Once we've done the trip I'll do a writeup so anyone interested can find out how it went.
Cheers
Ed

How about picking up the Route Napoleon at Grenoble and driving this fabulous road to Monaco/Nice, then driving along the Cote d'Azur, visiting St Tropez etc before heading north over the stunning Viaduc de Millau and wending your way back to the U.K? A great drive with superb scenery which should be do-able in 5 days.
You could also possibly squeeze-in Mont Ventoux!

Few years ago did the ferry to Bilbao, then upto St Sebastion (France), then followed the D918 through the Pyrenees. Some bits are a cart track other stretches are fast A roads. Lots of twisty bits in the mountains, lots of village cafe/bars. We did it on m/bikes, but would be even better in the TVR. One overnight stop in the mountains then on to Andorra, nice hotel overnight then back to the ferry. Excellent craic. Some areas may be a bit remote for TVR breakdown cover though

Thanks for the reply. This sounds like it would be really nice, just wondering about getting the the area and back. What would be the best route to Grenoble? Any ideas how the roads are to there from Calais? Definitely fancy Route Napoleon as I've heard a lot of good things about it.macar said:

This sounds like it would be a lot of fun, but yeah, breaking down could be a little scary
