The idea of moving the world cup doesn't bother me. At least mid season our players can't use the 'burnout' excuse if they disappoint like last year.

I don't have a problem with it.

I would have a problem if it was held in the summer, in Qatar - that would be madness.

Madness, I say.

How will this fit in with all the domestic league schedules?

I think the FA/FIFA/UEFA said there would be a break, and the season would finish a month later then normal.

As Qatar has already been chosen as host I'd say there is no point wink

To what level of football would the break be applicable? Premiership and Championship only, but then what about a 1st division team that may have say 3 players from the smaller nations that qualify. Currently if you have 3 players called up for international duty you can ask for your game to be postponed.

If all pro-leagues have a break, what happens to those clubs that run hand to mouth during the season, so not having any games for 6 weeks isn't going to be good financially for them, then throw in a bit of bad weather just before or after the break and a few more cancellations.

Then there are the players who have got to the semis/final who will have played x games extra and then in the final few games of the league season as your club is pushing for the title or avoiding relegation will be moaning that they are tired after such a long season.

If the quality of the last World Cup is indicative of what we can expect, then I'd rather it didn't interfere with the European club season.

It'll be like those winter evenings when the only matches on are Carling Cup games.

I don't like football but I don't like this either.
How oily must Blatter and co be? Lobing it to Quatar knowing full well it'll be in the winter and buggering aboot with everyone's fixtures.

Wonder how many hookers Seth got for that.biggrin

How it affects these islands does depend on how many of the four "home countries" qualify - not to mention the Republic of Ireland. Potentially, it could affect five leagues on these islands alone - not to mention the other European Leagues that do not take a winter break.

I think Qatar was an utterly mad choice and indicative of how rotten to the core FIFA actually is.

We could see the utterly embarrassing spectacle of the host nation being wiped out 7 or 8 nil in the opening game of the tournament too - given what happened in the opening game of the Asian Cup yesterday.

It's particularly bad in that this has *suddenly* been thrust upon them with little time to prepare/adjust to having a gap mid-season. wink

It's only one year that this gap will happen so I think all the clubs can put up with this "disruption" mid season, although I appreciate 12 years notice of this isn't enough time to prepare biggrin

Anyway, leaving aside the absurdity of having the WC in Qatar in the first place, having it in winter rather than summer is the lesser of two evils.

Wasn't the 1994 USA World Cup quite badly affected by heat? I have memories of Jack Charlton geting told off by FIFA officials for chucking water bottles on to the pitch during some of the games.
