Evening, all.
Am looking for a cruiser to chomp down boring motorway miles and traffic jams (have to do the M5/M6 north of Birmingham every day) and a long A road with lots of 50 mph lorries to slide past.
Have a Boxster to blat along in during the summer, but when raining, tired or whatever, feel the need to waft along in cossetted luxury sometimes.
So - am thinking of a older S class 320CDi (W220 model, 1999-2005). Am considering spending around £5k - so it'll have high mileage and be an earlier one, I know.
The question to you all is, is this a sensible enough price point to try and find one - or will they all be knackered and cost far too much in repairs and so on?
thanks!

It depends on you. A w220 at that price will "need" lots doing to it on the one hand; on the other hand it will keep going for a few years yet with nothing at all spent on it. What do I mean? Well the tyres will crap. The suspension rubber will be knackered. Various little things will be wrong. Bits of body work will be frayed. That's why it is 5grand. But it'll keep stopping and going on minimal maintenance for a long time yet. You might get a much better S500 at that price: diesel has an unfathomable premium attached to it.
Personally, at that money I would look for a mint w124 320 E saloon. Or an equally mint w126 500 SE saloon. Very, very good w140 S-Class saloons can be had at that price: friend of mine bought a stunning S420 from a specialist dealer for £6k two years ago, what a car that is, far, far better than the w220 successor.

I would go for a W140 S320 (petrol). Nothing else comes close in terms of comfort and reliability (W220 S Class included – mainly for the reliability bit).
Plenty of good ones and equally bad ones around. Just shop around and find the best unmolested example you can within your budget. Shouldn’t be too hard.
There is the option of the S280 (W140 again), but it is a little gutless. Happy to cruise along at any (sensible) pace, but struggles when you may want to move things along a little.
