Its always good to see someone modding a car in a way other than bolting readily available tat to it.

Reminds me of Street Machine magazine circa 1980. Everything was chopped back then

Would love to do that with mine, I'm 6'1 and there's loads of spare headroom so I reckon I'd still fit...

Yes, you most probably would. With bucket seats in a MINI, there is a hell of a lot of head room.

RKDE is on here somewhere, normally in the New Mini section.

I've done four Mini roof chops. None of them looked as half arsed and welded by Stevie Wonder on crack as that one does.

Good luck with the IVA/SVA. rolleyes

Maybe its the camera depth of perspective, but that roofline doesn't look parallel does it?, even to my pissed and untrained eye.

Hi,

Yep that is my long drawn out project.

My welds are not always the neatest but they are structurally fine. I have welded many cars over many years ~ its all penetrated perfectly and no one has ever commented on the welds being bad I suppose someone is going to have a dig. I have passed sample tests many years back so I have no worried, but I do agree I am not neat, that is why I clean the welds back up. Also its going through a BIVA as is the standard for this type of car now.

The camera and me probably don't get on but I can tell you that the car is mm perfect all round, the roof is not parallel with the car body as standard and it does sweep back, the roof height is 100mm down from its original point in all 6 places.

Windows are just shy of £700 for the sides and rear, they are plexi glass but will be ECER43 marked and the front is stock laminate glass cut to size with a water jet 5 axis machine which will cost a few hundred. Can't cut the sides because they are toughened where as the front is just laminated.

I wanted to do something different with this build, done classic mins and just didn't dare cut into my JCW so I sold it and brought this little fella. Its good fun and at the end if it doesn't pass regulations, I will put it on a trailer and attend track days etc and have some fun with it. Would be nice to have it on the road and so far my discussions and photos with the BIVA inspectors say everything is fine.
I plan to do everything myself where I can and plan to have a good time. Err I think that someone up to 6ft will just fit as the bucket seats are quite low and there is quite a lot of extra head room from the start.

I love men in shed... oh er not that way! more in building things in the shed, a bit like the engine build I am planning.

I do hope to one day get the car on the road, probably 2012 but I will see how this year goes.

All the best

Much better idea than the usual hideous plastic MINI customisations. It does, of course, need to be proper 70s metal-flake purple when it's done.

I think we should find a cheap car and chop it as a "how to" guide. wink

Brave choice with the BMW version. I would have gig'd the door to stop the chassis bending though.

You use a Jig to hold something rigid, a gig is where you go to listen to music etc.
PistonHeads, pedants corner.

Chopped roof's are great and a must have in the hotrod world. Here was my first attempt, I had to cut the roof into thirteen pieces and then fill in the gaps. The first cut was the hardest, after that there was no turning back biggrin

Mine is the purple one by the way:
