hi guys just looking for some other peoples opinions on what car the girlfriend should get as a 1st car

Budget for car is 3k and around 1.5k for insurance, so far looked at many small hatchbacks that go upto a group 7 on the old insurance scale.

cheers

VW Polo or Ford Fiesta.
Or even Ford Ka or VW Lupo for something smaller (less car to drive into something).

Just my opinion but non of the above. Get an old diesel 106 from the late nineties for £500/600 or similar. Put the money she saves in a bank & leave it there. There's no point her getting anything half decent because, sorry, the chances are that she may have a scrape at some point. Use the 106 for a couple of years to get some no claims bonus built up & then get something half decent.

1.6 mk1 focus

Cheap to buy and actually the cheapest thing I can find to insure (beating all 1.1s and 1.2s etc) at the ripe old age of 20

Ka, Polo, Fiesta, Lupo, C2, C3, Corsa etc. Stay away from high mileage diesels that could have huge repair bills for injectors etc, then just find the one she is most comfortable with in her favourite colour.

Job jobbed.

Because what she wants and what she needs are rarely the same thing.

Spot on. Of those I'd say a Polo is the better one.

well shes made her mind up on a ford ka, however she spotted a sportka and now likes the "look" of those. Anyone got any experience with either the basic 1.3 or more sporty 1.6 engined models?

I used to have a Sportka 1.6, great car! Really nippy, and was good fun to drive. Had it for 3 years and had no problems with it, kept it serviced regularly and had no extra costs.
