Ancient Toast & Mac OS 9 Query
Discussion
Just don't ask about the 'obsoleteness' written all over this query... I'm just grateful I've got electricity in my office...
I'm running Adaptec Toast 4.1 on Mac OS 9. I believe that before the computer was given to me, this ran fine for burning data CDs.
However now Toast doesn't recognise the burner (a Lacie USB device) even if I do various 'search' and turn off & on tests. If the burner is on when I switch the Mac on, the Mac freezes during start up.
Any crusty old Mac users who can remember using Toast a lot in the last century who can guide me will be rewarded with my undying affection. And yes... I know 'going out and buying a new burning suite' is the sensible option...!

Was the burner always used with this machine, or is it a more recent purchase.
If it is a newer burner then it could be that Toast does not have it in it's list of supported drives.
Two options come to light:
1) Buy a newer version of Toast
2) 'Download' a newer version of Toast for evaluation purposed and buy it if it works.
However, as you say the Mac will crash during start-up if the burner is plugged in then it's possible that you have a damaged system extension as I believe Toast installs an extension to enable further CD support than OS-9 includes. You can try removing this extension at startup by holding down the space key and using the Extension Manager to turn it off and restart.
